Pearl Jam's VS. and Nirvana's In Utero were released two weeks apart from each other with Nirvana's In Utero going first on September 21, 1993, while Pearl Jam's VS. was released on October 5, 1993. Most in the music industry believed music sales for each in the first week would be similar, but the results were very different. In Utero only sold 180,000 copies in its first week, while VS. sold 1 million copies in its first week. This was a shock for many, and showed that Pearl Jam was now the leader of the Grunge movement, the position many had assigned to Nirvana back in 1991/1992.
