State of Grace trailer using U2 music
« on: June 21, 2023, 04:19:18 AM »
Old news but I had forgotten about this.
In 1990 U2 were supposed to write music for Phil Joanou’s upcoming movie, State of Grace. Of course, Phil had directed Rattle & Hum…
But recording sessions for Achtung Baby took so much time that they couldn’t commit to the project. They were eventually replaced by… Ennio Morricone !

Anyway, as a « sorry, bud » they let PJ use One Tree Hill and Exit for the trailer :

Kinda strange how Joanou disappeared from view. He wasn’t a bad director. Not sure what happened to him.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

Yeah, I saw it. I once owned the DVD, I confess.
I guess the autobiographical aspect of the film explains how he sabotaged his career… then tried to save it with this film, which wasn’t very good.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

It was fun seeing Bono and Larry in it though.

Remember Larry who used to be in U2?

Anyway, Phil (not trying to remember how to spell his name) in real life was spiraling out of control and was invited by Bono to come on tour with ZooTV to direct a video for Wild Horses. He recreates it in Entropy, but by then they were (in real life) touring PopMart, so he shot that instead.

The movie was ok, but I’m not sure why you would watch it if you didn’t have a pre-existing interest in his work, or just wanted to see a couple minutes of Bono acting (while Larry mostly sits there saying nothing. I know, try to contain your shock.)
