Pitchfork Vs Rolling Stone on U2 Records. Who got it right?
« on: March 25, 2023, 04:27:34 PM »
So I've always thought that neither Rolling Stone nor Pitchfork were capable of objectivity when it comes to U2. Pitchfork has to cut them down to size and Rolling Stone has to be a pseudo fansite.

Anyway, to test my theory I pasted together all their reviews. What do you think? Are either of them objective?

Rolling Stone pretty much became a joke giving artists they love/friends with automatic 10s.

I would say Pitchfork got the 21st Century work correct.

CG you should have included SPIN as well.  I would say they are more reasonable than RS - which is nothing more than a political site masquerading as a music authority.

That is bizarre.  Especially since the two previous albums (Alphabet and A-Bomb) won all of those GRAMMIES - which as we all know is the real testament to how good an album is!

TJT and AB are 10/10 and not rating them as such is a fail. Pitchfork is undervaluing SOI and ATYCLB imo. They are not bad albums. Rolling Stone lost its marbles entirely though, so none of them are correct.

Rolling Stones overvalues in some instances whereas Pitchfork is undervaluing the band's albums in others (a not insignificant number of N/Rs in the case of the latter as well).  Can't say I agree much with RS on R&H and Pitchfork on NLOTH though (too low x2).

For No Line through to SOS Id say pitchfork has the numbers and order of ranking reversed. Basically goes from best to worst. How can SOS be better than the three studio albums?

SOS may end up being overrated due to the small number of people who can actually stand to rate it.

I'd imagine there may be some kindness/liking/goodwill for some of the songs on it based off their well known and in some cases loved originals.

Whereas the songs on those studio albums are just seen as rubbish.

Although the uplift in the rating is not very much at all is it.

Interestingly it is not a million miles from the overall critical score to date which is a 66 on metacritic albeit from a relatively low 15 reviews so far - which is 6.6 if using same scale.

Discuss that video/person in it, whatever/whoever it is to hearts content in the politics section - but yeah not in here.
