Putting SOS into 4 tiers.
« on: March 21, 2023, 02:11:55 PM »
My humble opinion of course -

Top tier:

Radically different and also good:

One
Pride
Two Hearts
The Fly.
IGWSHA
Vertigo
The Miracle
GOOYOW
Miracle Drug
Stories for Boys.
11 O'Clock
Out of Control

Tier 2:

Fine but not much new.

Beautiful Day
Walk On.
Ordinary Love
WGRYWH
SIAMYCGOO
Red Hill
Invisible
COBL
ISHFWILF
Song for Someone
Cedarwood Road
With or Without you.
Stay
Dirty Day
Lights of Home.
I will follow
Little Things
40

Tier 3:

Different to the original but poor.

Desire
Streets
Every Breaking Wave
AIWIY
SBS

Tier 4:

Similar to the original but not as good.

Bad
Electrical Storm
Peace on Earth.

So really 30% good & different.

Then 40% fine but not much new.

Then 30% either different or similar. But ultimately poor.

The problem is the 40%/second tier.

These songs are between 6 & 43 years old.

Now having a similar version of each song available is not very exciting or innovative.

But there are 12 songs in the top tier. Which is a whole single albums worth.

The second tier I could happily listen to while doing my ironing.

Have updated my tier list.

Stories for Boys, 11 O'Clock & Out of Control going into the top tier.

I like them & they are quite different to the originals.

Believe the album is going to take longer than expected to digest.

Just because l know the originals does not mean I can make instant decisions on songs. It may be even harder as have to try to break away from the originals a bit. Plus it's 40 songs!

First tier is really a play list I would create for a hardcore U2 fan who hadn't heard SOS -

Different versions which are good.

Tier 1 & 2 would be a play list for casual or people who knew nothing about U2 -

Perfectly listenable & enjoyable with some highs & minimal cringe moments.
