I see it somewhat differently.

For me it is a band with 4 top shelf albums from the 80's v a band with 4 top shelf albums (1 from the 80's and 3 from the 90's)

Pretty tight.

I like the Smiths but still U2 by far

20th Century U2 are my favorite band of all time,  therefore i chose U2.

If it were 21st Century U2 we were talking about i would have voted for the Smiths

There is an argument IMO for saying The Smiths have one of the tightest discographies in history.

4 brilliant records released in space of just 3 and a half years - all highly critically acclaimed and highly influential.
