50 Genuinely Horrible Albums by Brilliant Artists

Not really sold on the idea that all of the artists on the list deserve the "Brilliant" monicker, but here you go.

I agree with several of those. Raditude, Cut the Crap, and American Life are all pretty bad. St. Anger isn't good but I do enjoy listening to it from time to time when I'm in the right mood. I also think Around the Sun, while being R.E.M.'s weakest album, isn't as bad as many claim. Songs like "Aftermath", "I Wanted to Be Wrong", "Leaving New York", "Electron Blue", and the title track are all pretty solid.

Honestly couldn't be bothered to read anything RS puts out anymore.  If there were ever a list of '50 genuinely horrible magazines that used to be brilliant' i swear they would top the list.

During a good part of the 90s and even the early 00s i read and (at times) subscribed to RS.  I always knew they were a bit heavy on the political side of things,  and their religious views weren't necessarily my own to say the least.  However i kept an open mind and appreciated their in depth articles on my favorite bands,  the recording processes and tour reviews,  and their mesmerizing album reviews.  They used to blow me away with their style of writing,  even if they were at times just a political pulpit masquerading as a music magazine.  These days (last i checked anyways) they do not even try to hide it.  Hard pass for me.

Yes' Union at #3? That album is great and has some of my favorite Yes tracks on it.

Calling All Stations by Genesis is understandable. It's a pretty lame album.

I'm surprised at the absence of The Final Cut by Pink Floyd. That album straight up sucks except for like one track. Although I guess the article is about 'brilliant' artists.

What? No U2? Are they not “brilliant” enough or did they not produce anything “horrible” enough?

I don’t think Rolling Stone is able to be objective about U2

Huh? The Final Cut is Floyd’s best record after The Wall

It's my fave Floyd album, but I freely admit WYWH and The Wall are better albums. I also like Animals more than those two.

Could maybe be true if they only released those two albums.

‘Leaving New York’ is one of the best REM tracks ever. It gets so overlooked because the album flopped.

‘Never Let Me Down’ by Bowie is a fair one. Total dud. He knew it, though. But he rebounded with his next few albums - Tin Man, Buddha of Suburbia, and White Tie Black Noise were all solid. Even though the best song out of those records was a song Morrissey wrote for him and Morrissey’s version was still better (the original is sublime, though, so topping it was nearly an insurmountable expectation - Bowie’s cover is still fantastic.) Then 1. Outside and Earthling were both very good.

Mentions Bob Dylan - but no Self-Portrait (even though that album is allegedly intentionally and ironically bad) or Under the Red Sky? lol. Funny how he had 3 records come out at roughly the same time in the late 80’s - Down in the Groove, Oh Mercy, and Under the Red Sky - 2 of them terrible and then Oh Mercy sandwiched in between them was a classic. Dylan has released so much music that the chance of him hitting some duds was inevitable.

Even though U2 has had some weak records, they are at least tolerable - nothing atrociously bad, speaking as a whole. Even Leave Behind had Kite, Bomb had COBL, SOI had nothing great but a bunch of solid ones, SOE had The Little Things.

I’m not a huge REM fan overall but I always enjoyed ATS. And I agree LNY is a lovely tune.

 ;D

also, neither of those are top 5 PF albums. i used to LOVE The Wall but nowadays eh?

Earthling is Bowie's worst imo, and i LOVE I'm Afraid of Americans.
