Rattle & Hum / In Bed with Madonna
« on: February 05, 2023, 02:03:46 PM »
Both artists were big enough in the 80's to release cinema films.

Madonna's film did better box office. Not seen it all but it does seem to be more entertaining for fans. More talk & less concert footage. Warren Beatty & Kevin Coster making guest appearances. A more provocative title.

Both films perfectly watchable if on TV. However potential cinema audience very narrow - hardcore fans.

Not sure how R&H came about.

Edge said in 87 if they released a Live album they would want to put some new songs on it - the album.

Believe Edge also said he wanted to make a low key straight to video film regarding U2 on tour. However U2 were so huge it quickly escalated -  the cinema film.

R&H is the most eclectic album of the 80's.

Ideal if your a fan of hearing both live & studio U2 songs.

Then there were covers & an alternative version of one of their 87 classics.

Silver & Gold would be a new song to fans who had not bought Streets.

U2 fans I knew in 88 were not disappointed with R&H - the album. Certainly did not alienate or lose them fans. Maybe because it was released only 18 months after TJT

Not as focused & did not get the gravitas of TJT.

Don't know anyone who went to the cinema to see it. Although a Radio 1 DJ said fans that did go to the cinema treated it as a concert & would be out of there seats singing along.

In 1988, fans liked & respected R&H. Both the film & album.

The usual thing to do between studio albums would be to just release a live album. As Simple Minds did in 87. If the band were big enough, a live video would be included.

This would have been a huge seller for U2. However they gave the fans more & made a very eclectic album with a lot of new material. Together with a film. Then toured it.

The critics didn't like & respect it so much!

Have to be a really huge artist to get a cinema film.

Potential audience is not narrowed down to all fans. But a small percentage of these fans.

I would always buy a new U2 album & have been to concerts. But would never bother to go to a U2 cinema film.

Guess the film distributors thought U2 were so huge, there would be enough fans unlike me within the fan base.

Yeah, well…

Honestly I think it would have been better and easier for U2 to release a live album, then a new album further down the road.

First because… U2 never, ever released a proper love album (let that sink in).

And then because the movie made it bigger than it really was. Hence the backfire.

But I guess they made this up as they went. When the deal was made for the film they probably weren’t confident they’d have enough material for a new studio album. Hence this Frankenstein of a record. And a less than inspired movie.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

Releasing just a live album would be a bit of a cash grab. UABRS was only 5 years earlier.

They probably knew they would be going into another direction in the 90's. So wanted to release some new U2 80's esq material before the end of the decade. Which morphed into R&H, a film & Lovetown tour.

Yeah but still... isn't that weird that the mighty U2 never released a proper live album ?
