Pet Shop Boys - Streets. Why?
« on: February 03, 2023, 05:21:24 AM »
The Pet Shop Boys were perfectly capable of writing their own songs. A lot being hits.

So why do a cover of a song only 4 years old that had already got a lot of exposure?

Streets was one of ths songs of the 80's. It was perfectly suited to Edge's guitar & Larrys drums. The Pet Shop Boys version sucked all life out of the song.

Were U2 not able to block artists doing covers of their own songs? It would be obvious how this cover would sound.

However the 1991 version still got to number 4 in the UK so paid a few bills for them. Just a shame a band at their creative peak resorted to this.

Not only did The Pet Shop Boys ruin Streets, Neil Tennant had a dig at U2.

Bono saying 'what have I done, what have I done, what have I done to deserve this'.

The Pet Shop Boys were still a big singles band in the UK. So no surprise Streets was a top 5.

However it wasn't the song to get them back into the top 10 in America. Peaking at 72.

Streets was one of the songs of the 80's.

Lead song on the album & tour of the decade and released as a single in the UK/ US. The video shoot causing mayhem in LA.

Most Pet Shop Boys fans will already be aware of the song. So they are not getting  anything new.

Unlike U2's new version of Pride, their version of Streets was at exactly the same tempo as the original.

Maybe Neil & Chris just loved the song & wanted to pay a tribute.

I would like to hear Passengers remix some U2 songs,  if left to their own devices i bet they would give PSB a run for their lots of money.

Interesting idea. Passengers probably can also capture the zeigeist of U2 more closely than PSB.

U2 weren't exactly total strangers to covering other bands/artists themselves. As per the ol' proverb, I envision it to being a form of flattery.  I've certainly heard better and worse covers than this particular one.
