Should it have been a covers album?
« on: January 27, 2023, 05:59:19 PM »
Rewind a couple of years and the band decide to fill the time with a new project of unoriginal songs.

Now I'd of course rather they didn't do this at all and focus on new material. But if they must fill the time with something else, surely a covers album (of other artists, not U2!) is the way to do it. For these reasons:

- Many others acts of similar status to U2 do it. It's a long established way of paying respect, having fun, staying creative and selling new stuff to your fans. Nobody is above a covers album.
- They've got very good at it. I love what they've done with songs like Instant Karma, Neon Lights, What's Going On. They feel more original than a reimagining of their own stuff and I'd certainly be more excited by an upcoming covers album.
- They could have still tied it in with Surrender. Bono posted a playlist of his favorite tracks from when he was 18. They could have covered these.
- I think all four of them posted similar lists on social media. They could have expanded this to a 4 disc set, formulative songs of each band member and themed them...

1. Bono / Punk
2. Adam / Reggae
3. Larry / Glam rock
4  Edge / Prog

Now we'd have a very interesting and exciting project on our hands... rather than their stuff again but with a lot of the drama taken away.

Yeah Iíd much rather hear a covers LP. Although the question remains, would they do something as bland with that as theyíve done with their own songs?

In times past some of their covers have been decent. Iím just not sure theyíre able to reach that level now.

Their covers have mostly been misses.

Couple of good ones.

Pretty much.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

Both are pretty uninspired.

Guns n Roses did a covers album and it killed their career.  Haven't been relevant since other than making the news of their reunion tour.  And i thought the songs they picked were great- totally random with tracks from Fear, The Damned and The Skyliners.
Not sure what songs U2 would choose to cover but i'd be afraid it would include shitt like Billie Eilish.

Billie Eilish's last album pisses all over u2's last album.

A much more interesting, subtle, sonically interesting and well crafted collection of understated but complex songs than the guff on SOE.

Since 1995.....

I agree.

Itís excellent. As is Taylor Swiftís Folklore LP.

I am amazed anyone with even a passing interest in music is defending U2ís latest cash grab.

yeahhhhh but you could say that about most artists.  Better than SOE isn't exactly the mark of a great album.

I am all over Billie, and those are complete albums. Happier Than Ever has been a front to back on my playlist lately but Fall Asleep also solid.

I found Billie's Glastonbury set a mumbling joyless affair. Couldn't last more than a few songs.

covers i would actually like to hear by u2 would be of the songs that inspired them to form a band; Joy Division, Bowie, Stranglers, Buzzcocks, etc.
But i'd prefer to hear it from a younger version of the band.

Anyone praising Taylor Swift has lost the ability to criticize other music - i believe that's in the TalkU2 rule book.   8)

say what you want about TS, she cares about her fans.  And I can't imagine her ever pulling a lame stunt like the one Bono and Edge are currently doing with their weaker than weak SOS album.  Which isn't even a U2 album as the other 2 are nowhere to be found.
