Four stars. It has some low points, but judged against their post-Pop material it is very strong. I can't stop listening.
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.

Still haven't heard it, but I'm happily stunned at Mr. The Exile's reaction!  Soon...

4 stars. I love it. My favourite U2 album since POP, definitely. The only 2 songs I'm not as keen on are YTBTAM and TLTTGYA. Actually I think the weakest songs are definitely the ones they'd already released but I still like some of those anyway. All the other tracks I really like, especially Book Of Your Heart, Summer Of Love, The Showman, Love Is All We Have Left, Red Flag Day and the strings version of Lights Of Home. :-)

My early feeling is it's a top 5 record.
Let the past die. kill it if you have to.

You are all assuming that Bono is only acting like he's writing from beyond the grave. I do have the ability to assume human form, even the form of a tired old pop star in platform shoes. Since I have all the best music, and you are all rating this album, it follows that ......well, you know bawhahahahaha!

Too early to say for me. Definitely beats anything from the last 20 years imo

I've voted 4. Already listened to it more than I ever did SOI.
It feels more complete in terms of theme and concept.

I'm not a big lover of inoffensive music and lovey dovey lyrics but you can't help but get the vibe that Bono in particular is in a very good place.

Yeah, I'm gonna give this four stars. So surprised by this album!

I really can not get into these three songs:

YTBTAM - so I downloaded the acoustic version and replaced the album version with it.
American Soul
The Showman

Everything else is really, really good. I am even starting to like GOOYOW.
What are we going to do now it's all been said.
No new ideas in the house and every book has been read.

What I'm really enjoying about SoE is the exact thing negative reviews don't like -- easy listening. They say it like it's a bad thing. I'm finding most of the songs I can listen to at anytime. It's been a long time since I could do that with a U2 record. I don't have to be in a particular mood to listen to SoE. A few tracks, sure, but for the most part it's easy listening (with depth) and that's fantastic.

I also like the flow of this album. I'll switch a few tracks around, but production wise it feels like there was more communication/understanding between the band and the many producers. NLOTH and SoI felt disjointed and awkward, but SoE feels very consistent and on the same level. It feels natural rather than forced. HTDAAB gets a lot of flak, but production wise it's very consistent and similar to SoE in that regard.

Nice job, U2.
The Edge: “[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’”

U2 Fans: We'd all love to see that, Edge.

It's a 4. some weak songs but not skip songs. But no new masterpieces to add to the collection either. Love the fresh sound. Very listenable and songs that will keep bringing me back to it for some time to come.

4. Pleasantly surprised about how great the album turned out despite my pessimism about the first few tracks that were released. The album feels honest and authentic for the most part. Just get rid of AS, auto tune, and Kendrick and then it’s a 5.

I actually don’t hate the Kendrick stuff - I think it sits in nicely between two otherwise meh songs.
