Consequence of Sound hates SoE because Rolling Stone loves it
« on: November 28, 2017, 06:52:15 PM »
https://consequenceofsound.net/2017/11/u2s-terrible-songs-of-experience-is-rolling-stones-no-3-album-of-2017-thanks-to-jann-wenner/

The album isn’t officially out until Friday, so most people haven’t heard it yet. We have, though, and can tell you it’s nowhere close to being a top 3 album of 2017. In fact, the early consensus on the Consequence of Sound Slack channel is that Songs of Experience is one of the year’s worst releases, another dud in U2’s once flawless discography.
The Edge: “[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’”

U2 Fans: We'd all love to see that, Edge.

I can't think of anything nice to say about Consequence of Sound's reaction, so

To be fair RS are laughably biased towards u2.

To call SOI the best album of 2014 is not far off ridiculous IMO and I would imagine that even many hardcore u2 fans in this forum and further afield would agree with me there.

2017 hasn't been an especially vintage year after an amazing 2016 but I would be very pleasantly surprised if SOE was a genuine Top 3 of the year job for me.

Of course it is all subjective and only what we as individuals think about a record really matters but reviews are fun and all the bias/cliques etc that influence them!

"...most people haven’t heard it yet. We have, though..."

CoS are too cool for school.  ::)

Yeah I agree An Tha. CoS and RS are at the opposite ends of the bias scale when it comes to U2 reviews.

I only trust my own review, and the opinions of fellow fans I trust. SoE is a winner.

Without that bias scale reviews would be boring.  ;)

Yeah, but like Cat, I prefer the reviews from the U2 family of fans...the good family, that is.

Ya know, RS isn't really trustworthy when it comes to u2.

But I do think the album is easily top 5 of 2017

Who said SOI was the best album of 2014? RS or CoS?
Either way...wow.
To be fair, I honestly haven't listened to enough new music albums in their entirety this year so I couldn't say if SOE should be considered tops. But I'm diggin' it (MUCH MORE than I had anticipated).
I still can't get through SOI front to back. But that's just me.
Hey, hey, sha la la

I've never even heard of Consequence Of Sound before but I guess the new album isn't going to appeal to everyone. Worst album of the year is just ridiculous though! It won't be everyone's cup of tea but no way is it the worst. I'm really loving the album 1,000 times more than I liked their last album. :)

Haters be hatin'...

Listen I understand if they don't put it in the top 10 for the year but declaring it one of the worst?  Come on now.
Hold on, people! The man's talking about waste management. That affects the whole damn planet.

This will sound ignorant of me to say (since I have not heard this record), but I can nearly guarantee that Songs of Experince will not go down as one of the worst releases of this year. SOE has a greater potential to be a top three record of 2017 than it does a lower-tier crapshoot... and that's coming from a majorly pessimistic U2 fan.

I don't expect this album to be stronger than a Visions of a Life or Villains, but this album is automatically exempt from worst of the year contention because of that stellar opening track.
