American Soul... someone set Edge on fire
« on: November 28, 2017, 05:13:07 PM »
I'm actually enjoying American Soul now, particularly the intro. But I still wish someone had set Edge on fire for a ripping guitar solo, feels like it needs it.
The Edge: “[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’”

We'd all love to see that, Edge.

The first 2 minutes are great.

Yep, love the first half of the song... the second half needs Edge on fire.

This lyric doesn't bother me. The think that I really can't get over is REFUJEEZUS. Usually dumb lyrics don't bother me much but for some reason this just rubs me the wrong way. I take no issue with moles digging in holes but this is probably the worst moment on the record for me, and perhaps even Bono's worst lyric in my opinion.

I think it has to do with the inherently goofy concept of word combinations. It works well for something like RHCP with Californication, because they combined California and Sex. But here Bono sounds so horribly self serious talking about refugees and Jesus that it just comes off really gross in my mind. "Will you be my sanctuary?" And especially the delivery with the weird shouty emphasis is the worst part. I've tried to justify in my mind so it doesn't bother me (to no avail) because otherwise I enjoy American Soul.

I rather like the Refujesus thing.  It's so different that it comes across as cool to me.

If Oseary was worth a pinch of salt, Refu-Jesus would have been a viral meme on the internet by now, priceless publicity for the album!

Refu-Jesus reminds me of Korean Jesus from the 21 Jump St remake.

I nicked the snippet from XXX and added it as an intro to The Blackout. Similar themes, completely different sounds, which is nice and disruptive.
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.
