Simple theme. Movies where you feel the city the movie is based is important to the film.

I’ll start first with L.A.

1. The Big Lebowski
2. Chinatown
3. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
4. LA Confidential
5. Swingers

Just missed: Training Day, Heat, Collateral, Beverly Hills Cop
Jealousy, it's not what it's cracked up to be
Envy, gets you where you need to be

Just my opinion, but the steel mill town sort of defines the personalities of many of the characters. I think it's in Pittsburgh, but don't really remember.

Ya, it’s been so long that I’ve seen that movie that I can’t remember also. Will have to give it a re-watch

It's set in a small working-class town in PA called Clairton.

For me Lebowski's setting was never that vital.  Those other ones, the time/era is just as important as the physical city.
I'll add Repo Man for early 80's punk LA.

So many for Paris.  My top pick is Godard's Breathless.

Can't think of 5 films set there, but Trainspotting and Edinburgh.

Whole heartedly disagree about Lebowski. That movie IS L.A.

Just look at the Strangers opening monologue.

“They call Los Angeles the City of
Angels. I didn't find it to be that
exactly, but I'll allow as there are
some nice folks there. 'Course, I
can't say I seen London, and I never
been to France, and I ain't never
seen no queen in her damn undies as
the fella says. But I'll tell you
what, after seeing Los Angeles and
thisahere story I'm about to unfold..

Now this story I'm about to unfold
took place back in the early nineties--
just about the time of our conflict
with Sad'm and the Eye-rackies. I
only mention it 'cause some- times
there's a man--I won't say a hee-ro,
'cause what's a hee-ro?--but sometimes
there's a man.

And I'm talkin' about the Dude here--
sometimes there's a man who, wal,
he's the man for his time'n place,
he fits right in there--and that's
the Dude, in Los Angeles.”

The Big Lebowski in a nut shell is about The Dude in L.A. The city is his backdrop. That opening scene with tumbleweed takes you throughout the city. The movie takes him all over the area - Where he lives in Venice, to the Big Lebowski’s in Beverly Hills, to the drop off in the canyon, to Jackie Treehorns in Malibu, to the mighty Pacific where Donny’s ashes are spread.
Jealousy, it's not what it's cracked up to be
Envy, gets you where you need to be

The best Paris movie on my list is Amélie, but Hugo is a very good film too. Highly recommend.
