The coolest guitar intros ever?
« on: March 27, 2021, 08:21:27 AM »
What do you think are the coolest Guitar intros of all time?

I will start with my fave. I think Elvis - Suspicious Minds guitar part, is all kinds of coolness.

I will also add in one from our own 4 lads from Dublin. I happen to think the intro for One is sublime. Mind you, it was actually Danny Lanois who came up with much of the guitar parts for song.

I'm going to drop lots in this thread; for now, here's 10. Some of these are long (The Little Guitars intro is actually its own track); and some are short (the Ebony Eyes intro is just 1 measure long):

Little Guitars - Van Halen
Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin
When Doves Cry - Prince
Gut Feeling - Devo
Loud Love - Soundgarden
I've Just Seen A Face - The Beatles
Pinball Wizard - The Who
The Number Of The Beast - Iron Maiden
Diary Of A Madman - Ozzy Osbourne
Ebony Eyes - Bob Welch

Good pick with Ebony Eyes!

I think probably anything by Stevie Ray Vaughan could fit in this thread, too.

Watch the documentary they put out for Achtung Baby Smee. The making of One is well documented in it. Those guitar parts are Edges. He came up with it during the early version of Mysterious Ways.

Edge came up with the chord sequences in the song, but i have heard Danny Lanois mention a few times that he came up with the main riffs in the song. And, knowing Danny Lanois guitar playing quite well, i can believe it.

What Danny is mentioning here is the guitar part that overlays the main riff. The main riff is Edges. Lanois and Eno came up with the part that is heard on top of the main riff. Edges part is the cake, Lanois and Eno’s the icing. In terms of the opening, he was talking about adding a “hammer on” to the riff.  The hammer on gives it a certain sound. He doesn’t say he came up with that part though.

At the end of the day the song was still written by Bono and the Edge. Lanois does what producers are supposed to do: give opinion, direction, and add parts/fills to enhance the song.

We shall have to agree to disagree on this. my interpretation of what Mr Lanois says, is that he came up with the intro to the song, after a request from Bono to do so and the other background part, which is usually done via a pre recorded gutiar part, when played live.
