Rank the songs of any album
« on: February 26, 2021, 08:54:13 PM »
We did this for Achtung Baby in another thread. Simply rank the songs of your favorite albums in order of preference.

I just listened to R.E.M.'s Monster again (an outstanding album... their Achtung Baby, after all) and felt like doing some more of that.

1. Let Me In
2. What's the Frequency, Kenneth?
3. I Don't Sleep, I Dream
4. You
5. Strange Currencies
6. Tongue
7. Star 69
8. Crush with Eyeliner
9. Circus Envy
10. King of Comedy
11. I Took Your Name
12. Bang and Blame

Honest REM Q: if Monster is their AB, is Automatic their TJT? Or is is that Out of Time?

Monster is REM's Pop IMO.

Divides people, a bit of a departure, was not appreciated by fans of bands 'classic' sound and mixed reviews critically.

That and New Adventures...remain my favourite REM albums, not a big fan of them as a band down the years, but appreciated more in recent years.

I consider New Adventures their Pop - missed and forgotten. I wasn't aware that Monster was divisive in any way - was just a, uh, monster hit.

New Adventures is my fave, then Monster.

But... imagine if U2 had gone with an Up instead of an ATYCLB?

I have a deep fondness for the pre Out of Time albums, but Automatic is my favorite.

Out of Time is poppy in an overt and even baroque way, whereas The Joshua Tree can be melodramatic. Automatic for the People is the right comparison. (It's also much better.) Monster is fitting as a Pop analogue.

I love everything R.E.M. did through Up. Reveal never did much more me besides Imitation of Life and Summer Turns to High... can't recall the other tracks. Besides those two and most of Accelerate, I don't know the latter half of the band's catalogue well.

But... imagine if U2 had gone with an Up instead of an ATYCLB?

You just had to make this thread a downer...

Right, here's another. The Queen Is Dead:

1. There Is a Light That Never Goes Out
2. The Queen Is Dead
3. Never Had No One Ever
4. Cemetry Gates
5. I Know It's Over
6. Some Girls Are Better Than Others
7. The Boy with the Thorn in His Side
8. Bigmouth Strikes Again
9. Frankly, Mr. Shankly
10. Vicar in a Tutu

One of the most well-paced albums ever, I might add.

So, which is REMís War?  ;)

You had to do it!

Probably Document. Lifes Rich Pageant saw R.E.M. dip its toes into politics, but the band went polemic with this one. It's got the "singlely" The One I Love, serving the same role as Two Hearts Beat as One, and It's the End of the World... is their tamer yet equally anthemic version of Sunday Bloody Sunday.

I was in college through all their early releases (not counting Murmur and Reckoning). Document drew me fully in, although LRP was huge too. Green confirmed my devotion.  Automatic was when I said these guys are now part of the legends.

Also, I had a much better relationship with Monster than I did with Pop....  ;D

You've come around is what counts... I guess there's no weaning you off the War, though.
