1. The song you think is most misunderstood.

People, One isn't really the best wedding song.

2. A song that is awesome despite terrible lyrics.

TUF. I guess somebody is walking by, walking through, excuse me.

3. A song you think Adam makes a strong contribution to.

I could name some great licks (NYD) or skilled playing (RFD). But I think the imperfection and simplicity of Streets is a contribution maybe only Adam could have made, and it really works.

4. The first song you were really disappointed by.

I could name some stuff from ATYCLB but it was Miracle Drug that really cold-cocked me. ATYCLB I liked enough of that the other songs just got skipped, rather than filling me with horror. Bomb was terrible because they really let me down.

5. The one song you would play to your other-dimension self who has never heard of U2.

I guess I gotta go with Streets.

6. A song you have found helpful.

SYCMIOYO. Buck up, buttercup.

7. The best song with restrained vocals; the best belter.

Restrained parts of Velvet Dress. Belter parts of RHMT.

8. The song you wish you could play guitar for (or the one you most enjoy playing, if you can play it).

UTEOTW for sure. My second choice is Zooropa.

9. A late-career song you think could have been a hit if it was released as a one-off in 1993.

I didn't have answers in mind to any of these when I wrote these questions. But this one turned out to be the thorniest for me.

I could pick a song but then the context of 1993 poses a problem.

For example, MOS. Great song, but I don't think anyone wanted Bad Part 2 in 1993.

Some edgier songs would fit better, like Fez, but while I adore it, it was never going to be a hit.

SLABT, we weren't there yet.

I even considered LIAWHL, which I would argue would have been very interesting sonically, like "wow wtf is U2 doing?" But it would have made no sense in 1993.

RFD is not thematically transferable to 1993, nor TLTTGYA (not radio friendly anyway).

The best I can do is EBW radio edit (that is, piano) - because the album version is elevator music. Well, that's my answer, I actually think it could have been a thing in 1993.

10. The first song you think they actually knew what they were doing.

New Year's Day. Everything else was raw, but that was a pro song.

1. The song you think is most misunderstood.

With it without You

I’d call it the « Every Breath You Take » syndrome : a very unhealthy relationship being perceived as true love.

2. A song that is awesome despite terrible lyrics.

Discothèque

I don’t even care what it’s talking about.

3. A song you think Adam makes a strong contribution to.

Cedars of Lebanon

The chord progression is unusual for U2 and Adam highlights it.

4. The first song you were really disappointed by.

Night and Day

I was really in a guitars Vs electronics nonsense at the time and it felt like a betrayal.

5. The one song you would play to your other-dimension self who has never heard of U2.

Bullet the Blue Sky

The song changed my life.

6. A song you have found helpful.

The Troubles.

Letting go of someone isn’t easy for me.

7. The best song with restrained vocals; the best belter.

Restrained : Velvet Dress or Blue Room
Belter : No Line on the Horizon

8. The song you wish you could play guitar for (or the one you most enjoy playing, if you can play it).

I do. Bullet the Blue Sky (album version).

9. A late-career song you think could have been a hit if it was released as a one-off in 1993.

Magnificent

10. The first song you think they actually knew what they were doing

I think the first U2 album with actual proper songwriting is The Joshua Tree. So I’d say something like I still Haven’t Found or In God’s Country. The most traditional tunes.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...
