It would be far easier and faster to talk about the negative aspects of this album...

The common link between Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree is contrast. Flamboyant, then darkest of dark. Which is the thing I love the most about music. The ability to reach the extremes.
I remember Bono saying he was afraid the album would be « 12 angles of the same obsession » because the lyrics focus on relationships. And « fear of women » which was considered as a potential title.

It has many of U2’s best tunes : One, UTEOTW, Mysterious Ways which is a model of a pop song, Love is Blindness...

It has The Fly which was an incredibly bold statement.

Overall, the quality of the album can be measured by how great the lesser known songs are : Ultra Violet, Acrobat, So Cruel... no clunker, no filler.

And of course... Achtung Baby gave us Zoo TV.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

There are not enough words in the English language to praise this album.

That’s the easy list, though.

The highs are very high but it does sag a bit, too. Novelty songs such as mysterious ways and EBTTRT are examples of this.

Even so, The Fly, Acrobat, Ultraviolet, Wild Horses and Love is Blindness more than make up for it.

Happy for you, Mimi.

Unfortunately for me, my ranking has varied too much over past 30 years.

Mine has remained fairly consistent apart from One. It’s been done to death and I am a bit bored of it now.

EBTTRT was not a favorite of mine - don't get me wrong, I liked it well enough but it wasn't a highlight for me. But over time, I think it's a better song than I realized. The guitar really shines. Live, "take me higher" really exploded. It's like a hidden gem... that charted.

Also, extra credit for dirty lyrics. I think it's their dirtiest song save for DYFL.

Take me higher on the remix was nice, too.

For me, back in 1991, it was as high as The Fly. Absolutely loved it from the start.

What can I say?  It's the U2 album that has no equal.  If an album's first five songs could rival those on TJT, AB is the one to have them.

Current ranking:

1. One (still my favourite after all this time - and that's A LOT of time.)
2. Until The End Of The World (THE live moment of a U2 concert IMO.  Let's put aside the times they've not played it/dropped it.)
3. The Fly
4. Even Better Than The Real Thing
5. Ultraviolet
6. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
7. Acrobat
8. Zoo Station
9. Love Is Blindness
10. Mysterious Ways
11. So Cruel
12. Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World
