the inevitable thread: SOI vs SOE
« on: November 26, 2017, 07:00:24 PM »
This is a tough one for me. I think SOE might be the better record. Cedarwood Road, Troubles, Sleep Like a Baby, and Every Breaking Wave are hard to beat. SOE has its downfall with tracks 3-5.

Agreed about SOE tracks 3-5. But the rest absolutely KILLS ANYTHING in terms of quality, that SOI has to offer. I only really like 2 songs on SOI.

Way too soon to say for me. I don't hate SOI the way a lot of people do, I think that apart from TM, EBW, CA, and SFS it is pretty decent. I'm just glad I don't need to combine these 2 albums into a single playlist like I feared I would. SOE stands on its own for sure.

SOE for me. Whilst I like SOI, I don't find myself returning to it too often. With this album I can see myself singing merrily along to it for years to come.

I know it's soon and I've been quick off the mark before, but I think this one's a keeper.

In legacy terms, I'm already thinking of it as 'U2's abbey road'.

Let's see if I can say that in 5 years time and not look like an idiot. Here's hoping.

Bit too soon for me but at this stage SOI has it. And probably comfortably too. There is probably 5 songs off SOI I like better than anything off SOE, and SOI has strong depth for me too. SOE is fairly consistent but they are 3 out of 5 songs whereas SOI has many 4 out of 5 songs (for me). But let's give it time to grow (and for me to hear a better quality version of SOE).

I think it's slightly better right now but SOI was a really solid album in my opinion. A 'professional' reviewer said that SOE is their best since Bomb -  I think that is selling both SOI and SOE short because I think both are better than Bomb - by a couple horselengths at least.

I think SOE has more 'standout tracks' for me.
Hold on, people! The man's talking about waste management. That affects the whole damn planet.

I'm going with SOE.
I'm one of those who don't really care for SOI much, but this new album has caused me to revisit SOI to see if I hear it differently.

Yes. I went back and listened to SOI last nigh. I want to create a double album (Songs of Innocence & Experience), which I will do at some point. Right now if you asked me, the SOI side would include: EBW (acoustic), RBW (acoustic), Sleep Like A Baby Tonight, TIWYCRMN and The Troubles and Possibly Iris and Cedarwood Road.

The SOE side would have the whole album, minus The Showman, YTBTAM, AS and GOOYOW, but include Book Of Your Heart!

Some high points on SoI, but a lot of it felt under developed and Bono yelped a ton.

SOE and not very close.

I saw Gloria live. Even if I never see the band live again, at least I saw Gloria live. :)

SOE, easily. SOI was the step in the right direction with terrible schmaltz and undercooked musical ideas. Half of it is good.

SOE has finished songs and even better lyrics.

It still has the inevitable adult contemporary feel of post Pop U2, but they've become more crafty, more schwifty and Bono's voice is nicer too.
He wrote like wet paper mache, but then he went the lemmingway...

I’ll have to give SOE a few good proper listens but I’m a big fan of SOI. Was listening to it in the car tonight, best U2 album since Pop.

The dust has been settled a bit, now.

I still listen to SOE once per day. Yesterday I listened to SOI again. I did appreciate that album more than for the SOE release. I already liked it. But it's a different listen without knowing it's U2s latest album.

I think I like SOI more. It has deeper cuts which are musically better
