The u2 'clunker' count (of albums post-Achtung Baby) thread.
« on: February 02, 2021, 04:33:48 AM »
I thought this would be an interesting exercise to see the differences in how people view the consistency (or lack of) in quality of U2's albums post-Achtung Baby..

Zooropa: Dirty Day (*at a stretch..)

POP: Miami, (*Playboy Mansion..)

ATYCLB: Wild Honey, Peace On Earth, Grace.

HTDAAB: LAPOE, ABOY, One Step Closer, Yahweh.

NLOTH: Crazy-Tonight, Boots, SUC, White As Snow.

SOI: The Miracle, Song For Someone.

SOE: Best Thing, GOOYOW, American Soul, The Showman.

2018-2021: Ahisma.. ;D

Where to start...

ALYCLB - Beautiful Day, Elevation, Walk On, IALW, Wild Honey, Peace on Earth, WILATW, New York

Bomb - Miracle Drug, COBL, ABOY, OSC, OOTS

NLOTH - UC, IGCIIDGCT, Boots, SUC, White as Snow

SOI - Miracle, California, Iris, Volcano, Raised by Wolves, TIWYCRMN

SOE - Lights of Home, YTBTAM, GOOYOW, Blackout, The Showman

Fucking Ahisma - honestly, that song is a violation

Zooropa : nothing I truly don't like
Pop : Plyaboy Mansion
ATYCLB : Peace on Earth, When I look at the world
HTDAAB : City of blinding lights, Yaweh
NLOTH : Crazy tonight
SOI : Nothing I truly don't like
SOE : Best thing about me
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

Compared to Boots, Best Thing, American Soul and Ahimsa, the rest are modern day classics for me. So even if I never listen to Grace, Yahweh, Love and Peace...things are definitely getting worse in the clunker department.

Zooropa - it's perfect, exotic, wears it's crown and sits atop a majestic throne

POP * it's perfectly flawed but heaven-sent, dangerous and opulent at the same time, all jewels and gemstones, some shining in the sunlight while others sparkle under the moon and the endless stars you've been searching for

All that you can't leave behind : nothing really offensive on here, some good music, some boring, "safe", but no "clunkers"

HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB // a good album, not great, maybe a skipper or two but nothing horrendous

NO L INE ON THE HOR I ZON _=_ so this album starts off really good for the first 4 songs, it has the sound that makes you think you are listening to a classic album, something potentially great

and then this happens

it's really hard to recover from the middle 3 DISASTER, but there are a couple of decent songs in the recovery, however the damage is done.

Songs of Innocence <> the miracle, song for someone, volcano

Songs of Experience <> You're the best thing about me, get out of your own way, american soul, love is bigger than any song title in it's way
He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.

Zooropa - SDABTO

Pop - SATS, IGWSHA

The rest - easier to list the good stuff which for me is very little...off top of head.

One Step Closer
SLABT
Fez
TGBHF
White as Snow
Cedars of Lebanon

Maybe a couple more.

Soloyan, I believe this is a reflection of how Zooropa & SOI are U2 albums in which the whole is greater than the sum of their individual parts.

There are no clunkers on Zooropa.

I'm on the fence about it, any of (Some Days Are Better Than Others, Dirty Day, Wanderer) could be considered 'clunkers' if I wanted to be overly critical, but I love the album as a whole, it's a unique listening experience from beginning to end.

Like I said previously, Zooropa (the album) is greater than the sum of it's parts. I'd argue this only applies for Zooropa & 'SOI' of albums post Achtung Baby.

Dirty Day (in my very humble opinion) is not a clunker in any universe, galaxy, or alternate reality.

Same with The Wanderer.

Closing this oddball of an album with that song, that was a stroke of genius.
