This ‘live’ version of ASOH was actually recorded during a sound check. The crowd noises were added in a studio afterwards. Even so, it’s one of the best things U2 ever did IMHO. Later attempts to reproduce this song live were an absolute car crash.

Ever since they released this I have been annoyed that this version omits the line, "And we live by the side of the road," etc. Then just last year some time I discovered that (I think it was) the NZ release accidentally included that verse but omitted the "The city walls are all fall down" one. So I downloaded it on YouTube and combined them. If anyone actually cares, here you go:

(You'll notice slight differences in Edge's opening background vocals as well.)

Listen over marching bands playing out their time.

I am extremely confused. Especially as I have listened to this song a million times over the years.

The original features a subtler - and in my view nicer - reading of the line 'on borderland we run' at the beginning whereas Exiles version features bono belting out that line.

Can anyone explain this?

Yeah that is really weird. I have actually considered fixing that part but haven't bothered yet. My guess is that they did a couple takes and overdubs, and the two versions have some inconsistencies.

I stitched together the original intro that has the quieter "on borderland we run" with the rest of the added-verse version Exile made if anybody's interested in that.
