U2 Albums Aged Well?
« on: January 15, 2021, 11:40:14 AM »
Riffing off another thread where U2 lost to Kraftwerk and the subsequent relevancy conversation, which of U2's albums/styles have aged well and which have not?

Here are my thoughts:

Boy - it kind of sounds fresh today
October - this hasn't aged that well IMHO. Although I enjoy it as a record
War - this sounded bad then and it sounds bad now
TUF - I'm unsure about this. The production is pretty muddy but I think it stands the test of time
TJT - sounds as good now as it did then
R&H - this travesty of a record is even more embarrassing now than it was then
AB - I would image most here would agree this record has aged well. I am no different
Zooropa - same with AB
POP - although I like this record a lot I don't think it has aged particularly well
ATYCLB - I don't think this record has aged that badly even though I don't like it
BOMB - Jesus Christ
NLOTH - it's OK. I don't think it's aged particularly badly
SOI - this sounded bad then and it sounds bad now
SOE - it's OK. Ask me in 5 years...

If I was a mod in here, that comment on War would an automatic 1 week ban.

Allow me to qualify my statement. I actually enjoy some of the songs on it. Drowning Man and Surrender, as examples, are most pleasing. But the production on it sounds horribly dated, aside from being horrible generally.

BOY: A fine wine
October: A nice scotch
WAR: Cognac
Unforgettable Fire: Louis XIII
Joshua Tree: Tennessee Bourbon
Rattle and Hum: That beer keg they recovered from the Titanic
Achtung, Baby: Like Vodka, it doesn't need to age
Zooropa: Blue
POP: Aged like the woman in the velvet dress
ATYCLB: Budweiser
HTDAAB: Bud Light
NLOTH: Aged like George Clooney
SOI/SOE: Ask me in ten years

The only one that's aged badly is War. Not that all of the rest got better with age, but at least they've held up to whatever standard they initially set.

I don’t know.  Seems to me that War has an enduring appeal.  Still factors in their live performances.  Here’ 1983 to 2019.

I don’t think the songs themselves have aged badly - hence their enduring popularity in a live setting - more that the production on War means the recorded versions have.

The song The Unforgettable Fire has not aged well, sounds very 80s in a way that most of their songs don't.  Some of POP has aged pretty poorly as well.  Some of their first 3 albums also sound kinda dated, but I wouldn't single War out.  It has more timeless moments than the other two imo, but Red Light and Refugee are pretty dated.

Yes the keyboard parts in TUF sound pretty dated. And I’d agree, POP had not aged well, despite being a pretty decent album.
