Definitive live version of One?
« on: December 24, 2020, 02:44:15 PM »
Has this been discussed? However you feel about this song, it’s the one even most stubborn U2 nay-sayers would admit to liking.

So if you were to play a U2-doubter THE live version of One, which one would it be? For me it’s probably this one, considering quality of performance, crowd reaction, coda... But the sound and picture quality being pretty poor, I’d be interested in whether someone has a better version to suggest?

Never been a fan of the live version of One but if I had to pick one, it would be the Pavarotti concert with strings.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

I think most cite Tacoma as the pinnacle. That one never did anything for me, though.

I wouldn't call the Tacoma One definitive because it was an out of the ordinary performance.

Although I really hate the success of ATYCLB, the Slane version is very powerful and also beautiful. Other than that I'd go for Zoo TV and Popmart performances.

This is a real dilemma for me too. A lot of the Elevation and Vertigo shows were really great concerts, with a vitality to them that they have lacked since. They may have supported weak albums but they were at the top of their game live. Of course, the stripped back performances don't compare with the art of their 90's shows, but that was the entire point. The Elevation and Vertigo tours have their best live versions of almost every non-90's song.

U2 were still a pretty good live act around the time of those turd albums....sadly the decline in the recorded stuff was already well and truly underway.

Great suggestions. Had forgotten about the Slane version, it comes close.

Yes about being a great live band, for me that lasted through to the Vertigo tour. From then on their live performance has not had the same magic or energy comparing to their earlier selves, but they still do well live compared to most other bands, Suede being a notable exception for me.
