What do War, HTDAAB & ATYCLB have in common?

- They're outrightly the most overrated U2 records, by both critics & fans alike the band members themselves.

Boy (on the best of days) is a far more enjoyable listen than War. Also a bit more interesting sonically.

An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart (alone) is superior than anything on War except SBS & New Years Day.

POP is exceptional from start-finish, compared to the lopsided ATYCLB, which nosedives after track 5/6.

SOI is much more interesting, complete & cohesive than the incoherent rawk of HTDAAB. It's also, ultimately their best record since POP.

Are fans really overrating HTDAAB? I feel like it's pretty heavily disliked, mostly because of the rawk songs like Vertigo or ABOY, but also because of Yahweh. I think SOI is better but only by a hair; they're both bottom tier albums for me.

Pop is a lot better than ATYCLB though, that's not very close. I agree that ATYCLB is overrated by both critics and fans. Boy is also slightly above War for me, but they're both so good that it's hard to rank them. I supposed if you're not a fan of War then it would seem pretty overrated. "40" is not one of my favorite tracks but the rest of the album is really great (even The Refugee).

Bullocks. I won’t waste more than 1 minute responding to such nonsense.

@Restofit: to confession immediately!

(obviously, just for the WAR part... you folks know me)

Yeah, I read the first sentence and figured we'd all need to Venmo Martin to help him with his therapy.

Venmo, is that some kind of Zoom video call thing?

And clearly, resto does need some serious therapy.  ;D

War is easily one of their best albums. The other two are whatever. So I declare the argument to be false.

It really started with October 1981 when the Gloria video hit MTV airwaves in the US.  War was the next leap forward producing a band that seemed unstoppable.  So many great songs - New Years, Sunday, Two Hearts, Like A Song, Surrender, 40 etc.  This was a career defining album for a band on the verge.  Boy really didn’t move any needles very much.

The only things these albums have in common are the black and white photos on their covers.

Just so we’re clear: the iconic one is the one with the kid.

- They're outrightly the most overrated U2 records, by both critics & fans alike the band members themselves.

----------

The Grammies did go overboard on Bomb. But was there anything better released that year? NME also gave it a generous 9/10.

ATYCLB got good reviews. It was a good album and back to basics, which a lot of people were pleased about after 10 years.

War got slated by NME. Saying U2 should have changed direction more. Later saying TUF was 'their best yet, it just takes a bit of getting used to'.

----------

Don't recall U2 ever criticising their own albums. They all put up a united front. Not even admitting Boots was the wrong lead single. They did say Pop was not finished & Larry said he only liked the drumming on Passengers.

Edge said in 2006 Bomb & AB were as good as TJT. Suspect he only mentioned Bomb as it was their last release.
