Underrated Guitarists
« on: November 26, 2020, 05:46:08 AM »
We all know who the lauded axemen and women are.....but what about the brilliant but less lauded players?

Suggest away!

I am going to start with this Gentleman...yes they are a well known band, but always felt his playing is hugely underrated and he is of course the bands front man/singer too - making his playing as lead guitarist even more impressive.

Watch this for a good scaled down and raw example of his talents.

Maybe not super underrated but Rush is the only band I can think of where people can name the bassist and drummer before they can name the guitar player. La Villa Strangiato is peak Alex Lifeson, one of the best guitar solos Iíve ever heard.
To the evening, D-Day and beyond

Tom Verlaine was always regarded as Television's resident guitar mastermind. He wasn't - Richard Lloyd was. My 2nd fave guitar solo ever, only topped by Robert Fripp's utter insanity on Eno's "Baby's On Fire."

If Chris Whitley is remembered at all these days (he died at least a decade ago), it's for his amazing voice; Carlos Santana once described Dionne Warwick as the first singer he ever heard where he couldn't tell if she was black or white from her voice, and Whitley was the male equivalent of that to me. He was, however, also an incredible - if very idiomatic - guitarist as well. I wasn't at this show, but I was in the front row the first time I saw him perform it.

Dare I say Mark Knopfler? I know he's in a "famous" band, but has he gotten the recognition he deserves? In my opinion, no...

Good shouts to Peter Buck and Mark Knopfler in particular.  I'll add Lindsey Buckingham.
