Bono once said something along the lines of '2 crap albums and it's game over'. Which 2 albums have come closest?

I wonder if anyone here will pick ATYCLB and HTDAAB.  ::)

U2 have never released a crap album. Mixed albums of varying quality, yes, but you can't unequivocally call any of their albums complete crap.

Maybe "wasted opportunity/potential" is the better term than crap. U2 have had those in spades.

And like Tom Cruise, U2 always bring their A Game!
The Edge: “[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’”

U2 Fans: We'd all love to see that, Edge.

I can't vote..."worst" U2 albums just doesn't compute in my head. I mean, I know they can't all be the best, but I don't think any are the worst either!

That honor obviously has to go to ATYCLB/HTDAAB. Those are two dreadful, heinous albums that an older U2 would have been ashamed of. I'd call the latter U2's absolute worst.

NLOTH at least has several bright spots, which is more than could be said for its two predecessors. Cedars of Lebanon and certain aspects of Moment Of Surrender and Fez-Being Born harken back to the days of a more sophisticated band.

I voted October/War, because I'm so done with War at this point. Absolutely LOVE October, though - even its weak spots.

What?!  I'm with you, to an extent, on HTDAAB (though it still has several excellent songs).  But ATYCLB is a great album--not perfect, mind you, but a solid 4/5.  It's the album that completed the narrative arc of their creative career (and that would have made a fine farewell, perish the thought, had they been so inclined).

For me it's either HTDAAB/NLOTH or NLOTH/SOI though, again, none of them are truly bad albums.

To each their own. I personally have a strong distaste for overtly saccharine pop tunes like Beautiful Day or Wild Honey, so ATYCLB is certainly not for me.

I don't think they've had a stretch of two truly bad albums.  I find redeeming value in even my least favorite U2 albums (Pop and ATYCLB). I really like about 4-5 songs on both of those albums.

I can't say this about other artists with really long careers - I go through Rolling Stones catalog and find most of their later albums just not good at all.  Then, there are bands with really short careers where the output is stellar, but it's a bit of lightening in the bottle.  What's amazing to me about U2 is that they've kept it up for decades...and even the weak albums are good IMO.

ATYCLB / HTDAAB  for sure.   So many throwaway tracks.  ATYCLB improves the back half on a full listen.  HTDAAB is a hodge podge of trying pre-determined ideas for songs.   The best tracks are the ones that randomly appear out of nowhere.  I'm almost OF the opinion the A Man and a Woman is the best track on the album.  Vertigo and COBL had such a huge impact to make it album of the year in a weak field.

ATYCLB and the Bomb.  Although I don't think they represent what U2 would consider crap albums.

Their early albums doesn't count for the rule, imo.

ATYCLB and No Line. But since I like No Line more than ATYCLB (in terms of counts of listening) I voted for ATYCLB and Bomb. But it's not true they had to stop right there

HTDAAB and No Line but no line has some excellent tunes but also total turds. In fact, the trilogy of magnificent, MOS and Unknown Caller is one of my favorites.

my 2 least favs are Oct. and HTDAAB. So i voted ATYCLB/HTDAAB instead of HTDAAB/NLOTH. i like ATYCLB well enough even if it hasn't aged with me well, and i REALLY like NLOTH <well 90% of it>

Plenty of consensus that it's ATYCLB/HTDAAB, which was my vote too. I don't think there are any BAD u2 albums, just not quite as good ????
