RS Top 500 all-time
« on: September 22, 2020, 02:03:04 PM »
Rolling Stone has a new Top 500 all-time. I think the boys have stopped sending monthly cheques to the editors.

JT drops from 27 to 135
AB drops from 63 to 124

The others on the previous list from 2003 are out. (Boy, War, ATYCLB)

No sign of Pop or Bomb.

An irrelevant list from an irrelevant organization

I guess much depends on the rationale used for the rankings.  Is the aim to be closer to the subjective or the objective?  How many times a band or artist appears on the list as well could be another point of interest.

It looks like they went heavy on including more RB hip hop voters.   Quite obvious.

I like that AB is ahead of JT.

Achtung Baby is one behind Led Zeppelin II.  Goes to show the way generations are changing.

It was nice to see more of gen x take on the elder role of voters.  More metal, smiths, talking heads.

I like seeing
Rumours all the way up to 7.   Everybody loves that album from 17 to 77.

Sgt Pepper drops from 1 to 24.  Damn.

U2ís Apple stunt did them no favors with these younger voters.

As somebody growing up in the 90s nice to see some classics finally get recognized.  I didnít check the whole list.   It seems overly weighted for 2020 diversity however.

Is it a diverse list with representation?
The Edge: ď[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ĎYou know what? Weíre not going to second-guess any of this. Letís just go for it.íĒ

U2 Fans: We'd all love to see that, Edge.

Seems like some large changes from the 2003 top 500 albums and the 2012 top 500 albums. A lot of new voters I think. Still, with three list like this, 2003, 2012, and now 2020, it would be interesting to see what albums made all three list. It will of course be 20th century albums primarily, but still interesting to see.

Yeah, hip hop has a big presence. Btw, 154 albums werenít present on either previous lists (2003 and 2012).

Take the Top50 for example. Thereís a lot of major hip hop albums on it. NAS, Lamar, Lauryn Hill, to name a few.

Btw, I did listen to To Pimp a Butterfly the other day (at the insistence of my 21yo old son) and it is indeed a masterpiece.

Had a peek at the top 50. That was a joke. Loads of unworthy albums in there. Obviously, they are trying to appeal to a certain demographic.

It's sort of like their attempt to remain relevant, but in realty, very few but those inside their circle, really care.

They asked 300 different music artist, music producers, music industry professionals etc. to each rank their top 50 albums. The only way they could have appealed to a certain demographic is by asking people from that demographic to be among the 300 voters. Probably would be equally as interesting to see a list of the people who voted for this 2020 list compared to the 2003 and 2012 lists.
