The Unforgettable Fire - Song Elimination FINAL
« on: September 06, 2020, 01:05:19 AM »
Classes are about to start for me, so I wanna speed this up a bit.  Gonna start the rest of the 80s now.

Vote for what you think is the WORST song on the album, and each round the song with the most votes will be removed, eventually giving us a ranking of the songs on The Unforgettable Fire.

If there is a clear winner and at least 15 votes after a day, I will end the poll there and say what song was eliminated in an edit to this post.  If it's tied or very close or there are under 15 votes after a day, I will let the poll run longer.

Ranking:

1. A Sort of Homecoming
2. Bad (51.9%, 14 votes)
3. The Unforgettable Fire (42.3%, 11 votes)
4. Wire (65.2%, 15 votes)
5. Promenade (50%, 12 votes)
6. Indian Summer Sky (36.4%, 8 votes)
7. Elvis Presley and America (33.3%, 10 votes)
8. Pride (In the Name of Love) (36.4%, 8 votes)
9. 4th of July (47.4%, 9 votes)
10. MLK (33.3%, 7 votes)

Okay, I'm going to have a hard time with this - not because I even rank TUF that high but because I don't know what yardstick to use.

Like, EPAA is a one-take song. Do I judge it on tbat metric or do I compare it with fully developed songs?

Do I judge Bad based on what they laid down on that track or the song itself, which was greater than what we hear here?

And so on. This album isn't typical in many ways.

this is really going to be tough as all of these songs are great

some are better than others but none of them deserve to be eliminated

I went for MLK. I love the song, but...some song has to get the dunt. I will be voting for ASOH and Pride early doors.

Elvis by a country mile, worst song of the 80s.

I like it, but MLK gets my vote. The only track of this album I dislike is Pride, which I had to sprinkle some of that "objectivity" over to keep me from tossing it in round one!

MLK is too simple a composition to have been poorly executed. Pride, though annoying to my ears, at least displays some songwriting chops the band had only recently grown into at the time.
