For me it was Pride, 36 years ago today. I did buy that 45RPM single btw, and side B was a little weird.

The Fly.  I was brought into the U2 fold on a combination of Under a Blood Red Sky and Rattle & Hum in the lead-up to Achtung Baby's 1991 release as an early teen.  The one-two punch of knowing & liking several of their tracks from radio airplay, and the power of their live recordings across UABRS and R&H was irresistable.

Desire.

It was so satisfying to hear U2 going sideways regarding what was going on in music at the time. If you look at the charts in 1988, there's a lot of 80's crap.

I was so in love with the band at that point. They just couldn't do anything wrong. I was listening to them all the time + learning the guitar by playing Rattle & Hum tunes. I remember going to England and buying the When love comes to town 12" single (terrible cover, by the way). Good times.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

I was around when Boy came out. Electric Co was the song that really got my attention and hooked me.
I’ve seen for myself, there’s no end to grief, that’s how I know, and why I need to know that there is no end to love

Really...too far back to remember! (It's not easy being this old!) But, I guess Gloria would make sense...

Technically Helter Skelter because one day my mom just popped in the R&H cassette in the car. But I had no idea it was coming and it was all mashed up with my initial fandom (with TJT).

I'd say Night and Day was the first real new song in the sense that I had time to look forward to something new and heard it was coming.

And The Fly was the first one that they, you know, actually wrote.

Heard Get On Yours Boots on the radio sometime in early 2009. I remembering thinking it was a lot like Vertigo.
Or is it now?

New Years Day was the first u2 song i recall getting played AFTER i had become a u2 fan. The Video got its first play on Top Of The Pops and i remember watching it. My Uncle and Cousin were round visiting at the time. Im pretty sure it was around the start of the year (1983), as i reckon my Uncle and cCousin were round visiting at New Year. I could be wrong tho.

The next song i recall knowing about, was Pride. My Mum shouted me down, as the new u2 video was coming on Breakfast Tv.

In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You
You were acting like it was the end of the world
