Pop vs Zooropa
« on: August 17, 2020, 03:59:24 AM »
I prefer Zooropa myself. It feels more of a complete, fully realized, coherent record. Pop is not cohesive enough for me (though it does have some incredible standout tracks such as Mofo, Gone, Do You Feel Loved, Wake Up Dead Man, Please, Discoteque).

For me the problem with Pop really comes down to 4 tracks:

TPM, Miami, IYWTVD, IGWSHA.

These tracks are nothing but unfinished filler to me. They plod along without really going anywhere and would have really benefited immensely from the extra 3 months the band was (allegedly) supposed to have working on POP before their touring commitments got in the way.

Zooropa easily for me.  POP has some great highlights, but it's plagued by a couple lackluster songs and a couple lackluster versions of excellent songs.

If God Will Send His Angels and If You Wear That Velvet Dress are just ok imo, not bad, not great.  I feel the same way about Discotheque.  As for Miami. . . they tried I guess. . . .

The album versions of Please and Last Night on Earth are noticeably unfinished and have two of Bono's worst on-record vocal performances ever, though I do love both songs as songs.

They also got the track order wrong imo, not drastically wrong, but Mofo should have been the opener.

Well, if that verse is true,
there's hope for me and you.

i would say its a tie

both albums are a journey; pop being the heavier of the two, and both albums seem to have a fitting end

i like the ending on zooropa better, but i think pop has a couple more highlights

zooropa is the castle on top of the mountain, at times if you are looking at it from below it appears to be in the clouds

pop is the rainbow after the flood, you appreciate the promise but are aware of the devastation

i would take either album to the island and tell the rest of the world to fuck off

Pop by miles.

Zooropa is mostly throwaway filler.

"Trump supporters are fucking morons"
“Albums still matter,” he said to the crowd of pop star and music luminaries. “Like books and black lives"

Pop but I prefer Zooropa overall.  Zooropa has more 'lows' than Pop but has more stellar moments.

Pop, by long way. But Zooropa is brilliant too!

Pop is an album of some of the greatest rock music anybody ever made.

Zooropa is its own world where it's always 3 AM.

Zooropa wins.

Pop. While it doesn't have the high that the title track of Zooropa gives that album, I feel there is more solid material on Pop. Zooropa may win in a heads-up best track versus best track battle for the first couple songs, Pop wins out after that.
