There's a bible verse,
says the last one shall be first.
Well, if that verse is true,
there's hope for me and you.

And there's this brilliant version of Love is Blindness from Edge

I think it's mainly a timing thing.  MTV Unplugged was big when U2 were in their big, ironic period.  Doing a small "sincere" and "intimate" acoustic show wouldn't have suited them in that era of the band.

They swerved it because they simply didn't have the chops.....that is ok, u2 are showmen rather than top class musicians, they put on shows that are heavily augmented as opposed to gigs, and they were good at what they did.

They would have been embarrassed by a unplugged gig.

Apparently they're still a thing.  Bought Liam's new Unplugged album. He doesn't really have the chops either.

i mean but were Nirvana seen as master musicians? i think had they done this from 98-02 it could have worked.

i love his solo albums but sometimes <in concert, esp. the Familiar to Millions show> his voice hurts my throat to listen too.

Read an interview with Unplugged's producer in which he said that his wishlist from the show's beginning was - in order - The Grateful Dead, U2, and Van Halen. They never got any of them.
