"I love that song. I wish I'd written it, and they know I wish I'd written it. It makes me dance; it makes me angry that I didn't write it." - Michael Stipe

This from an old clip, but I'd never seen this, and it's pretty remarkable.  Stipe dancing at a U2 gig like any other fan.

says the last one shall be first.
Well, if that verse is true,
there's hope for me and you.

Stipe clearly has cloth ears.

Stipe feeling so anxious at the thought of not making it in time for Beautiful Day is very amusing. And what's up with the Stipe/Batali friendship? I once watched them together on one of the chef's old shows, and I had no idea there was anything more to that.

Michael Stipe sounds so in love with music... it’s great. Great little clip.

BD is one of my favourite songs. I remember Stipe said he was impressed U2 opened the album with the song, when traditionally the big single is track three or later.
The Edge: “[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’”

U2 Fans: We'd all love to see that, Edge.

BD is a much better song than what most folks in here think.

Funny thing is I hated it at first. Now, when it comes on the radio, I hum along.

But it’s not one I will put on deliberately.

We give that song a lot of shit around here, but writing a song like that that everyone knows, even people who have never actually listened to it, is an astounding feat.  There's no recipe for writing a hook that instantly sticks in the mind like that one does.  Across all their many albums, they've only managed to do it a handful of times.

I remember now Stipe said it “took balls” to open the album with BD.

Agreed. The fact that it sounds exactly the same live as it does on record doesn’t help.

Why does it take 'balls' to start an album with the lead single? By the time the lead singles out, it usually determines the fate of the LP anyway.

As far as I'm concerned BD is hopelessly naff and has no balls whatsoever, wherever it appears on the album.

I have always liked Michael Stipe. He comes across as someone id like to hang out with. The clip itself is great. I have seen it many times over the years. PS, i miss REM. Pound for Pound, they are likely my most fave American band.

I'm not particularly a fan of REM although I enjoy their New Adventures in Hi-fi LP. That said, I caught them on a whim at their last ever concert in London, and they absolutely rocked.
