2017 delivered another fantastic album by The War on Drugs, A Deeper Understanding.

I was anticipating that new album with great trepidation, and the band was very much in a teaser mode when they decided to slowly release 5 songs prior to the full album at the end of the summer.

It all started with the first single (if we can call it that), the slow burner Thinking of a Place, an 11mins long piece that was love at first listen for me. I still play it on a regular basis.

First Chair. Last Call.

Pretty much from the day MPare started this series, I knew some of the years were pretty much set in stone for me already. I knew what songs would take 1993, 1996, 2005, 2012, and 2018, and I knew some years like 2001, 2004, and 2014 would be ties. 2017 is another one of those that I knew would be a tie; I just didn't know how many songs would be in that tie until today. Jain's "Makeba" and U2's "The Blackout" should really be in here as well, but I'm keeping it down to two. Great Lakes girls ftw!

"I Love You More Than You Love Yourself" - Austra (happy Canada Day!)

and "Exhumed" - Zola Jesus
