Fisrt, Iím not really a big fan of rap music. Thereís some good stuff in it, but also a lot of crap. Sometimes, though, a song transcends its genre completely and that happened in 2002 when Eminen released Lose Yourself. A powerful statement, and a song that defined forever Marshall Mathers. I also think itís a very uplifting song.

(Fun fact: itís also the song that prevented U2 from receiving an Oscar for THTBA, which was not a very worthy song anyways)

2002 is when Peter Gabriel's last studio album was released... I remember thinking at the time I heard "Growing up" that the man was still 20 years ahead of his contemporaries in terms of sounds and production. I'm happy to report that, 18 years further down the road, that comment remains valid.

A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

2002 highlights:

Doves released The Last Broadcast - from it 'Pounding' is a big contender here for me as is 'There Goes The Fear"

If you haven't heard this album, give it a go, it is quite u2 like in many ways...and much, much better than anything u2 released in the 00's - trust me.

QOTSA released Songs for the Deaf - 'No One Knows' is a solid gold banger from it and of course was a huge hit, 'Go with the Flow' another gem from it.

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights gave us 'Obstacle 1' which nearly won this vote for me.

I almost went again to Sleater Kinney for the winner - 2002 saw them release One Beat - 'Combat Rock' is proper political rock n roll not platitude driven nonsense....real anger....'O2' and 'The Remainder' gems too.

Sigur Ros and their ( ) album which is made up of untitled tracks is a stunning listen, beautiful

But the best album of 2002 in my book was The Breeders Title TK and from it the absolutely gorgeous 'Off You"

'Off You' - The Breeders
