This one might be disputable as a 2001 pick, but the song was a breakthrough hit for Coldplay in North America in the spring of 2001, although it was release in 2000 in the UK and Europe.

Yellow started a quite long love affair between Coldplay and myself, and I will unashamedly admit that there was a point after A Rush Of Blood To The Head that I thought they were now my favorites, above U2. Unsurprisingly, that feeling stopped once they started releasing crap albums like Mylo Xyloto.

Anyways, hereís the video. Probably one of the cheapest ever made.  ;D

First Chair. Last Call.

I'd consider BjŲrk's Vespertine to be my favorite album that year, but no stand out track, really.

Pyramid song from Radiohead was a serious contender. New Order's get ready is solid.

But I think this tune redefined the map of popular music and how genres would merge into one another for the foreseeable future.

A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

Not a vintage year IMO.

Shouts for:

The White Stripes album White Blood Cells and from it Fell in Love with a Girl, Hotel Yorba and Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground.

Radiohead released Amnesiac in 01 and You and Whose Army is the standout for me fron it.

Vespertine from Bjork gave us Unison.

The Optimist LP by Turin Brakes is a very good album many may not know - Future Boy a highlight.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - No More Shall We Part gave us Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow.

I am not a big Muse fan but i like their early work and i actually forgot their debut album Showbiz when doing 1999...a bad oversight on my part, they deserved a nod for that album and songs from it and they get one here for Origin of Symmetry - New Born and Plug in Baby are superb rock songs.

But there was one album and one album alone that really, really caught my inagination in 2001and that was Is This It by The Strokes.....they may have turned to shite quickly but this is one of the greatest debut albums of all time IMO.

From it the best song of 2001 is..... Hard to Explain - or is it New York City Cops - or is it The Modern Age....arrrrrgh, can't decide.....

Hard to Explain
