If you could give u2 one bit of advice....
« on: June 06, 2020, 01:14:26 PM »
what would it be?

Id like to see BONO drop this fixation he has with being accepted by the young pop crowd. U2 are so much better than garbage like You're The Best Thing About Me and such like.

hmmm. Well, I guess I'd tell them that I know they probably won't give us another Achtung Baby or Pop, but how about another album like The Unforgettable Fire, or The Joshua Tree. Those albums...well, I think U2 could still do some of that. But, I, being one of "those" fans...will take whatever they give us, and I'll take it happily.

All great advice above! I would like to add, stop focusing on America. It's a mess but so is everywhere else.

Write songs about things that take people away, let their mind escape, and don't cause people to desire to fall off of the planet or wish for a giant asteroid to slam into earth.

At the risk of opening a can of worms here, I think this is where USA fans differ to us European crowd. We are far harder to please over here. We are a far more demanding crowd. Bono has said it a few times in the past himself. I will not just happily accept anything the band put out. Again, Bono has said in the past that he would rather the fans kept the band on their toes, rather than let mediocrity set in.

Revisit your music from the 1980s and 1990s when you make your next album.

This. U2 was at it's best in the 80's when they focused on America. However, since then the opposite has been true.

I would say find a geographical location that reminds you of nothing you've ever seen. Focus on that. Berlin was a great idea. The Desert was a great idea. Sweden/snow was a great idea. They tried Morocco and it nearly worked.

Try something new. Something different. Maybe try going to a Gaelteacht in the West of Ireland and get in touch with some roots music. Maybe stop killing your inner pink floyd as Bono has acknowledged U2 often does. Something. Different. Something new. Something that challenges us. Maybe try a completely new musical instrument.

Embrace this Leonard Cohen phase of life. In other words, stop penning lyrics of trite inspiration for young folk preparing for adulthood and start writing of the regrets, fears, disappointments, angers of people in their 60s. Perhaps sprinkle in a few moments of poignant wistful nostalgia.

See my signature.
The Edge: “[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’”

U2 Fans: We'd all love to see that, Edge.

Focus more on the music being great than on the lyrics or the message.
