Rattle & Hum - All studio.
« on: April 29, 2020, 04:38:09 AM »
Desire
Van Diemens Land
Angel of Harlem
All along the watch tower
ISHFWILF - Gospel.
Love Rescue me.

Hawkmoon 269
When Love Comes to Town
Silver & Gold
Heartland.
God part 2
All I want is you.

----------

Silver & Gold could have been beefed up. Liked Edge's guitar in the live version. A studio version would not have Bono speaking.

Prefer 'All along the watch tower' to 'Helter Skelter'. U2 could have done a good studio version. Does not matter that it is a cover. The album was paying homage to American legends.

For me that is a top album of 12 songs. The live songs/ musical journey U2 wanted to cover, can be kept to the film.

Notning wrong with having a Hawkmoon' moment.

Maybe U2 didn't want to release a total studio album as a follow up to TJT. Believing people would compare and would be disappointed if not as good.

That would have happened if U2 had gone underground & there was a long gap between albums. However R & H was released mid tour the following year & came with a film. So no one would have been disappointed if R & H was not as good as one of the greatest albums ever. As it happened, the format R & H was released in, was still criticised.

I'd like to see a remastered edition fo R&H with all studio tracks, no covers, something like this:

Silver and Gold
Desire
God Part II
Hallelujah Here She Comes
Hawkmoon 269
Van Dieman's Land
Heartland

Angel of Harlem
A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel
When Love Comes to Town
Love Rescue me
She’s a Mystery to Me
All I Want Is You

If they had focused just on studio work rather than including live tracks, R & H could feature higher in U2 album rankings.

It would still have been considered a change of direction. Not as heavy as Boy & War but not as mellow as October & TUF.

A bit similar to TJT, but with guest artists, Edge singing a song, covers & alternative versions of old U2 songs, still unique.

That's what I mostly listen to anyway, the studio tracks. Well, that's not quite true ... I'm really taken by the live versions of Pride, Bullet and S&G. At any rate, R&H is one of the albums I still listen to a LOT. Just ... in pieces. :)

This.

I remember "Desire" in particular surprised me when the album came out.

They could have released a live album at the end of 1989. A collection of songs from the JT/Love Town tour. Fans that like the live recordings then have a whole albums worth.

A closure to the decade as U2 move into the 90's. Will help Bono pay the rent until the next tour.

Tell me more, what surprised you about Desire? I liked it but didn't experience any surprise.

Will help Bono pay the rent until the next tour.

I hear he was in tight with the landlady so he was probably okay :P

Van Diemens Land <edited>

Hm, yeah, I want to edit the beginning and end. Chop off the stupid interview segment at the end, and chop the Helter Skelter fadeout and just do a quick fade in so that it's a proper song on its own. Poor Edge, his song got stomped on.

IS THIS OKAY, MARTIN? It doesn't touch the music!
