The Showman
« on: April 09, 2020, 08:31:17 PM »
I've seen this song mentioned a few times as being a worthy track off SOE in the other thread, and thought that maybe had changed over time. I think it was largely panned a couple of years ago, in particular (not talking about the album as a whole).

What do you think of the song, and did your opinion change over time?

Well, you know me...I like all the unpopular songs. I'll give it a YAY. Although, it did take some warming up for me.

Me too, high five. It took a while. It's not my favorite or anything, but I like it.

It's a "fun" song, and I love their fun songs. I mean, the fun songs aren't my U2 priority - they didn't shape my life like their heavier songs but I do play them.

Honestly can't remember it - googled the lyrics and fucking hell are they banal are what!

Some absolutely stinking rhyming couplets - what is it and modern day Bono with bad rhyming lyrics:

Baby's crying 'cause it's born to sing
Singers cry about everything
Still in the playground falling off a swing
But you know that I know
Walk through the room like a birthday cake
When I am all lit up, I can't make a mistake....

I mean bloody hell.

Nonetheless i went onto youtube to listen to it...i lasted 45 seconds before had to stop it.

I know you are here to kill me. Shoot, coward, you are only going to kill a man

Voted meh. I’ve heard more offensive stuff in recent years, but we are far from greatness here.

It's funny ... this song is not one that sticks in my mind, I actually had to put it on to remind myself what it's like. I liked it! I think if it had come on the radio and I didn't realize it was U2, I would have enjoyed listening to it, which is pretty much how I evaluate most songs. :-)

But since it is U2 ... so many songs I like better, I suspect they crowd it out of my mind. So ... better than a meh, but not quite a yay.

I do think they could have dropped the brass, but I've never been a big fan of that particular type of horn sound.
Are you tough enough to be kind?

An utter embarrassment. There is NO WAY that the band who made Acrobat also made this song. Thank Lucifer I have only listened to it a few times and have no memory of how it goes.
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,

The showman gives you front row to his heart
The showman prays his heartache will chart
Making a spectacle of falling apart
Is just the start of the show

Right? How DARE I even be a part of the U2 forum-verse? I should get banned immediately by Matt!!

My least favorite U2 song is probably Peace on Earth. And if you get mad at me for that I will consider you an enemy and then tear down a tree and use it on you, because those are words that make sense.

ya i know a few of you hate that one. i guess i just see them as MOR U2 songs <Grace, POE, One Step Closer, White As Snow>. the offensive shit starts when they remake the SAME SONG 3 times in under a decade <Glastonbury, Volcano, American Soul> and NONE are that good. when they plagiarize themselves blatantly i tend to hate them.
