Is there much love out there for the likes of 4th July, The Ocean etc?

I have to say...i absolutely adore u2 tracks like The Ocean and 4th July (and such like). They are really atmospheric and haunting. Wish u2 had more tunes along those lines.

Great thread.

The Ocean was a fave for me at the time that I was paddling through Boy in the back catalog journey. I admit I don't seek it out anymore. I did get a kick out of seeing it live - I pictured telling my 13 year old self, who was digging the tune, that I'd see it live in eighty billion years.

Remember mix tapes? I used 4th of July as a palate cleanser OFTEN in mix tapes.

Scarlet is favorite of mine as well, and October.

Yep, big fan of them, here. I don't think I'd want to listen to an entire album of them, but they're a vital part of the albums they're on, imo. Scarlet's a favorite for me, too.

I'd almost throw Little Things that Give You Away into this category. The coda of that song sends shivers down my spine.
Are you tough enough to be kind?

'The Ocean' I like.

'4th July' leaves me cold.

Doubtful U2 will release anything similar again. 'Five years wait for this....'

Big fan of 4th of July

almost reminds me of the calm before the storm,  so meditative,  hypnotic...

makes me think of faraway places i want to visit before i go

I like The Ocean.

4th of July is also a good mood piece IMO.
Hold on, people! The man's talking about waste management. That affects the whole damn planet.

I've always wished we could get a more ambient U2 album like those tracks. The band does it so well.

Well, there is Passengers Original Soundtracks 1 out there, though that was a long time ago now.

I'd be content with an EP with 3-5 such tracks from the past twenty years, if they still play with such things in the studio. It seems like they might have done so during the No Line sessions (like FEZ and even Soon).

  • What gives human life it's worth anyway?
U2 do atmospheric tunes way better than stomping singles as far as I am concerned. The way The Promenade (BTW there was someone called that over on atu2 and he was a real dick) segues into 4th July is quite superb. Ocean is great too.

What gives human life it's worth anyway? Because someone loves it? Or hates it? The flesh is weak, only the soul is immortal.

Agreed. A highlight of the last tour for me too. If only Bono would cease the speeches...
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...
