Most haunting songs
« on: February 29, 2020, 06:15:55 AM »
I just heard "I'm on Fire" by Bruce Springsteen on the radio and was thinking how I really like the 'haunting' kind of sound to it.
Another one I like is "Things that Scare Me" by Neko Case. Oddly, they're both short songs at under three minutes.

Anybody else know any haunting songs he or she likes?

Jeff Buckley’s rendition of Hallelujah tops everything in my book.

A truly "haunting" tune for me is, Talking Heads - The Overload. BRILLIANT tune!
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You
You were acting like it was the end of the world

"The House Of The Rising Sun"

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I'm one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

Oh mother, tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I'm one

I find Springsteen's The River a haunting song.  He's done quite a lot actually such as Racing in the Street, Highway Patrolman, Independence Day, Brothers Under the Bridge, My Hometown, Streets of Philadelphia, Youngstown, You're Missing.

The Boys of Summer by Don Henley is haunting.

Brothers Under the Bridge...that last line and how it just fades out

I come home in '72
You were just a beautiful light
In your mama's dark eyes of blue
I stood down on the tarmac, I was just a kid
Me and the brothers under the bridge

Come Veterans' Day I sat in the stands in my dress blues
I held your mother's hand
When they passed with the red, white and blue
One minute you're right there... and something slips...

Nothing Man by Springsteen is another haunting song. A firefighter who survives the towers in 9/11, is talked about as a hero, but is so depressed and distraught he wants to kill himself

You can call me Joe
Buy me a drink and shake my hand
You want courage
I'll show you courage you can understand
Pearl and silver
Restin' on my night table
It's just me Lord, pray I'm able

Darlin' with this kiss
Say you understand
I am the nothing man
