A u2 concept album?
« on: February 15, 2020, 05:51:59 AM »
The 'albums that are better listened to all the way through' thread got me thinking about concept albums and then I thought about u2 doing one...

So a u2 concept album - yes or no?

Okay then, thanks for clarifying.
Hmmmmmmm. Well, if the concept was something other than Bono's personal life, yes. But that's where he does most of his best writing, so it probably won't happen. I love all of his lyric over the years, but would prefer the concept to be something new...

I don’t like when a song segues into another in an album. For example : Get out of your own way / American Soul. I hate that. Because it’s rare that you love all the songs the same way and the transitions are generally speaking very bad (think Pink Floyd The Wall : helicopters, children, teachers...).

BUT... if it means doing an all ambient album with 15’ tracks I’m all for it.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

I say no. We got their version of a double concept album.

They always have a strong theme, so that's the space they work in.

What do you think about the transition between An Cat Dubh and Into the Heart or between The Electric Co. and Shadows and Tall Trees?

Yes absolutely. They've never really done one before.

I’ve always considered An Cat Dubh / Into the heart as one song.

I hardly ever listen to Shadows and Tall Trees.

But that makes me think that I love If You Wear that Velvet Dress but hate Playboy Mansion, and the latter really spoils the intro of the former.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

As it is a subjective term and there is no clear definition/specific criteria of exactly what constututes one, you are not 'wrong' to hold that view - but in my view they haven't....not by my own personal definition.

That they have by yours is fair enough, I just don't agree.

NLOTH was their concept album and was an almost great album. If only they'd really committed to the journey of the traffic cop...

I think by now we all know their life stories personally I am fine if they don't make any more albums about that concept.
