U2 vs The Police
« on: November 11, 2017, 05:12:40 PM »
U2 is generally the band given credit for taking over the mantle from The Police once they left the scene.  Here is a head to head poll on the first 5 albums for you to pick between.  You will be able to pick one choice for each category, so for example, pick between Boy and Outlandos d'Amour, then between October and Reggatta de Blanc and so on.  If you care to leave comments about your pick, so much the better.

I really enjoy "Ghost in the Machine" and "Synchronicity".  Both albums contain some timeless tunes, but I still had to go with U2 ;p

Tough call this as I am not massively into u2's eariest records - TUF is a stone cold classic, a fantastic record which I love, but the rest are just OK in my book.....I was never much of a Police fan though so U2's 5 edge it for me.

As an aside I think both bands early albums fall short of Echo and The Bunnymens first 5 in the quintessential early 80's album stakes though.

The Bunnymen never kicked on after that IMO - but Crocodiles, Heaven up Here, Porcupine, Ocean Rain and Echo and The Bunnymen trump both u2 and The Police's first 5 in my book.

Album 1: Police
Album 2: Police (love October, but Regatta's The Police's best)
Album 3: worst album by each band; didn't even bother to vote.
Album 4: U2...GITM's incredible, but TUF's touched by the hand of [insert deity name here].
Album 5: Police...kinda funny how both albums begin in 6/4 time, no? Anyway, "Tea In the Sahara" puts Synchronicity over the top.

The intro to Streets is actually in 3/4, I'm pretty sure.

1. U2
2. U2
3. The Police
4. U2
5. U2

Both bands are in my top five and their records are a close call. U2 wins most categories by a narrow margin, with Joshua Tree and Synchronicity being VERY close.

I can't resist:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNIZofPB8ZM
The Edge: “[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’”

U2 Fans: We'd all love to see that, Edge.

No, it's 6/4 time.

All of the sheet music I'm finding online displays 3/4 for the intro.

Agreed. I would also add the Waterboys to that list.

Never listened to The Waterboys - might give them a try.

1. Police (incredibly great, mature debut album)
2. Police (October is a tipycal difficult second album, Regatta slightly better)
3. U2 (War and Zenyatta very close, was hard to choose)
4. U2 (TUF was my first U2 record, and one of my favourites)
5. U2 (The Josua Tree is The Joshua Tree. And for me Synchronicity is a very overrated record)
