On this day we should think about improving the way serving and veteran members of the military are treated by their employers and society as a whole. In the UK, they are underpaid relative to the emergency services and suffer poor working conditions, including not being provided with adequate kit, and many live in poor quality housing. Veterans are significantly over-represented among the homeless and prison population, and are more likely to suffer mental health problems and alcoholism. As we expect our armed forces to fight for our collective security and risk death and injury it isn't asking too much to treat them with the respect they have earned. It's clear that resettlement and support services aren't good enough and the MoD need to do much more in this area.
