Timeless or dated?
« on: January 31, 2020, 11:56:38 AM »
What songs or albums do you think are timeless?

What songs or albums do you think sound dated?

Do you think U2 has made music that is any more timeless than other artists, or about the same?

Funny you should ask this. Last night...in my bed...i got to thinking of asking our fellow members, which u2 album they felt sounded most dated in 2020.

Ive yet to think of an answer to the question tho

Maybe rock in general doesn't sound as dated to me. Whereas pop is totally dated. Pop songs from just a few years ago are dated.

Hey, I just met you. And this is CRAZY.

The first four albums are horribly dated to the 80's, but TUF is still a masterpiece.
AB, Zooropa and Pop are dated to the 90's although there are a few tracks on each of them that are timeless such as One and Stay and don't feel like they're trapped in the 90's.
TJT is timeless.

There are some outdated sounds on the early stuff like the big Lillywhite drums but at least there's no 80's cheesy synths.

I'd quite like to hear a u2 album with a heavy synth sound.

You should probably check out the upcoming Inhaler release

I have heard some of their stuff - found it pretty uninspiring.

conspiracy theory- Bono is using his son's band to create a different sound than what would be accepted by u2 fans.

Subjectively, I experience the first four albums as dated and the rest feel reasonably timeless for me.

I realize that my experience probably isn't objectively accurate - I'm thinking Gen Z would hear TJT and AB as dated.

I wonder if they would feel the same about ATYCLB though. I feel like the current "alternative" sound started at the turn of the century and hasn't changed much or at all in 20 years.

It's werid because the overall sound of the 90s is way different from the 80s, which was way different from the 70s, which was way different from the 60s, which was way different from the 50s. But I feel like anything in that genre from the last 20 years sounds like it could have come from either decade.

Unforgettable Fire the song sounds pretty dated.  The bass thing in Gloria too.

Interesting, I'm the opposite. IMO Pop is the one U2 album that really does age. It was properly trendy like they'd never been before. It's so of the time that the production has dated it whilst U2's other work is nearly all timeless. See also Bowie's similarly trendy Earthling released the same year and firmly dated to that era.
