Your top five music videos
« on: January 15, 2020, 07:40:31 PM »
Vote for your TOP FIVE.

I've included every nomination from the previous thread.

Every album except Boy had at least one nomination. And several non-album nominees as well.

If there are different versions of a video, it doesn't matter, just vote. It's okay; we"ll assume anyone voting for Stuck doesn't mean the football version.

Finally, yes, THAT song got a nomination. And THAT one too. And THE OTHER ONE. I'm not making this up. And I'm not judging either  ;)

I'll share my picks so y'all can judge me.

Numb
My #1. It's cool, it's interesting, memorable, looks great, meaningful and related to the song, good lip synching. By the way, goid lip synching is important to me in a music video and unfortunately Bono sucks at it.

Sweetest Thing
I just think it works well, the premise and execution and it's fun to watch.

Beautiful Day
It's cool and fun and the plane shit rocks.

Vertigo
Yeah, a song off my most hated album made my list. It's about what I like in a music video. I think the band looks reasonably cool, there is a visual hook, it's fun to watch, it's related to the meaning of the song without being overly obvious. The lip synching is okay, which is the best it gets for Bono.

Sometimes You Can't...
And it's TWO off my most hated album! The only one in my top five that is serious and not playful. It just kind of hit the sentiment of the song pretty well.

Honorable mentions

Found
I find this period of videos so obnoxious but Obnoxious Bono singing into Annoyed Edge's ear seems pretty meta so I'm kinda down for it.

One
It works.

Mysterious Ways
Almost a home run. Jesus, Bono, I know you can't dance but at least stand up straight? He's graceful so can't he just, like, move cool or whatever? He pulls it off onstage just fine.

Stay
Really really good. I guess I'm a basic bitch about lip synching on videos though. Gimme something to work with. The statue thing is awesome, drag is awesome.

Discotheque
I'm the opposite of everyone else; the Villiage People part is the ONLY giod part. The staging is awesome but I need more band members being cool. We get only glimpses. Also, I know you guys can't dance, but surely you can have a couple of choreographed moves? Okay, you did ONE move. MORE.

Please
Almost made my top five. Probably it should have but I just enjoy the others a little better. Absurd, ridiculous - just like it should be.

Finally, I checked out Crazy Tonight. My eyes are really bad so I couldn't follow the storyline. The animation style was compelling, it might be good.

And nobody nominated Song fir Someone, but Woody did good work and the filmmaker and camera operator did good work. There's really good stuff there.

Yes! Love this song.

All I Want Is You
Even Better Than The Real Thing
Stay (can't go wrong with Wim)
The Sweetest Thing (U2 at their most fun)
Window In The Skies (terrific effects)

The Walk On video was pretty cool too, and I love the plane takeoff in Beautiful Day. Other honourable mentions Love Is Bigger (the claymation video is great), The Fly, Mysterious Ways, Desire, WoWY, One, Every Breaking Wave.

The Edge: “[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’”

U2 Fans: We'd all love to see that, Edge.

I dunno. It got mentioned. I watched every video that I wasn't familiar with before I voted but I didn't bother with that one.

Worst video, You're The Best Thing About Me. What the hell is it even about?

Maybe I'll take worst video nominations some other time.

God knows RHMT is gonna be on that list.

I checked and it was Shank who nominated AMAAW - or at least I think that's what he meant.

Most of their videos from ATYCLB and Bomb were bad (although i think BD, BAMAAW are kind of cool and SYCMIOYO is great), especially Vertigo, Elevation and as previously mentioned Stuck.

Edit: I have to admit maybe I shouldn't have taken those as nominations but oh well. It was a positive endorsement.

1. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

You can tell how much fun they were having while making this one.  Basically just the band messing around in Vegas, very basic video, but I love it.

2. Even Better Than the Real Thing

That camera rig thing is so cool, and this video captures the feel of the Zoo TV era better than any other imo.

3. One

Both the bar video and the drag video are just great.

4. Stay

I like the band ghosting the other band singing their song thing and the black and white bus stuff.

5. Desire

Band looks really cool here, especially Bono in his red hat.

WOWOU?

Stay is my favourite, and probably the band's best. Bono falling to the ground in a "bang and a clatter"... U2 at their best, serious yet not so serious. It's the right mix.
The Edge: “[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’”
