There is no future in hydrogen cars. It’s a pipe dream.
Not a pipe dream. I work for energy companies as a financial consultant and there is a lot of hype right now about Hydrogen as a fossil fuel. By Hydraulically Fracturing in the right places, instead of releasing Co2 or methane, you can release huge quantities of isolated hydrogen. The problem with Hydrogen today is that it is expensive to separate from the compounds it's bound in, like water. However, if you can get hydrogen directly out of the ground you can use it to power a car or generate electricity.
I have no trouble with hydrogen as a fuel that could be used for industrial or other institutional use. I’m sure it will happen.
But, for cars, it’s just not practical. And until there’s a distribution infrastructure in place, no one will buy these cars. If no one buys the cars, no one will build the infrastructure. Toyota Mirai sales in Canada in 2019 were a slim 70 units...
In the case of EV’s, you have the power source right there at home. And fast chargers for long distance travel are popping all over. They are less expensive to put in place than hydrogen fueling stations.
Maybe there’s a future for hydrogen in cars, but we won’t see it in our lifetime.
