Do You Feel Loved appreciation thread (the song... not myself)
« on: November 09, 2017, 05:55:21 PM »
Is there anyone here that holds this hell of a tune among their favourite U2 songs?

I am firmly convinced that it's one of the 90's U2 magnus opus, and that it should appear on every list of U2 best songs ever.
It's an absolute perfect blend of bold/extravagant ideas and catchy hooks.

Sadly, the boys never cared too much about it, and dropped it altogether from the setlist of Popmart right just when they were close to getting it right... Surely the american crowds reaction played a big part on their decision, but the song had immense potential.

As a proof, this is the third to last performance in Eugene, before it was axed. Without doubt the best one.
I'm sure the european Popmart crowds would've gone mad for it but, as the story tells, the tune never saw the old continent and was dropped after only seven performances.

I think it was a big mistake not releasing it as a single (as they initially wanted to), it would've had a good run on the charts. I would argue it would had been even a better choice than Discothèque as the lead single...
Perhaps without the initial backlash things would had been different regarding the album reception.
But it's the same old tiresome story right? :)

Have your say

Absolutely love this song...it's sexy, it's desperate, it's dark, it's bright, all at the same time. It may be their sexiest song...even more so that Velvet Dress or Hawkmoon. (Did I say it might be sexier than Hawkmoon? I must be coming down with something...)

Yup it's nice. It's one of those songs that I replay because I didn't hear it good enough. But it's not a song I would recommend to my best friends: you should listen to this

I hope they could dust off this song  :)

Phenomenal song, and one that easily fits into U2's top-ten. Adam's funkadelic bassline is undoubtably one of his best, and Edge delivers some terrific riffs in accompaniment. Lyrically, Bono has never been so raunchy, not then or since.

Ultimately, I consider Discotheque to be the better option as the lead single. It took gonads for U2 to release that tune with that video. U2 could not care less about the implications of Joe Public possibly misinterpreting the song, a sentiment that is sorely missed.

LOVE it. The bass line is sick and the lyrics are unreal. A top-10 U2 song for me.
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.

Love this song!  "Love is coming, pushing and shoving, in the belly of a woman; heavy rhythm taking over, stick together a man and a woman."  I count this as one of my top U2 moments of all time.  Sexy as hell, too.

Love it. What a great trifecta to open Pop with Discotheque, DYFL and Mofo. I would have gone with Mofo as first single and DYFL 2nd. Such a shame they played it live so few times.

I've adored this tune ever since I first heard Pop. Adam's bass line is sublime and everything flows effortlessly. It's a shame they never gave this one much of a shot live. It has the potential to be stunning with the right arrangement.

Ronald Reagan once gave a speech describing a Republican Party as one of "Bold Colors not Pale Pastels"

He'd probably enjoy 90s U2 over the 00s for the that reason.  DYFL is bold AF.

Great song and so many memories for me when I hear it.
Like a certain smell it takes me elsewhere.

Howie B used this song to inspire U2.

Initially was my favorite track on the CD, glad many still consider it a gem. I had that Eugene bootleg at one time. Agree; should have been the single to showcase the CD, but alas there track record of single choices.

so use u2start.com to dl the bootleg again. it's great.

i don't hold the song as one of the best they've ever done but it's good.

anything would have been a better lead single than disco. my vote would have been for Gone to be lead single.
