Cabaret Bono is lame
« on: December 28, 2019, 05:08:30 PM »
So this morning I sit down in front of the TV and see that U2’s e&i live from Berlin is on YouTube. I’ve only checked out glimpses from the tour but as this was professionally filmed and covered a good portion of the show I decided to watch.

Starts with Elevation which I quickly fast forward. Then Bono in some ridiculous makeup and top hat mutters on about something I can barely make out. He looks like Boy George after a bender. I’m starting to think thank God I didn’t travel to see this. Then comes Vertigo which I fast forward through.

Next up he’s projecting the Devil on his face on the screens. Obvious to fans he’s brought back MacPhisto. Once again very lame so I fast forward through the speech. Cool, it’s Acrobat. The band is doing well but the urgency that Bono sings with on the studio version isn’t there. Good but not a great version of the song. More yapping I flip through and then I hear the opening to a Your the Best Thing About Me.  Enough flipping, I just turn it off.

I thought the I&E show I saw wasn’t that great, but at least it didn’t have cabaret Bono. Anyone else feel the same way? He looks and sounds incredibly lame.

Definitive U2 Top 10: 1. One, 2. Bad, 3. With Or Without You, 4. Running to Stand Still, 5. So Cruel, 6. Ultraviolet, 7. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, 8. Hawkmoon 269, 9. Red Hill Mining Town, 10. Luminous Times

I actually dig the top hat look.

Well, if that verse is true,
there's hope for me and you.

I saw the Experience And Innocence show twice and thought it was fantastic, better than the Joshua Tree Tour 2017 which I also saw twice.

I thought Bono's style and performance was new and refreshing. Another sign that they are the greatest music artist of all time.

Their last good to very good non nostalgia was back to basics Elevation

That's the direction I'd like to see them go in a live setting.

The show is good, they all performed great. Bono is aging, but that concerns everyone, but he is in great shape. If I was his age, I would like to be in such condition. As for Boy George, he now looks more masculine than in his best years. :)

I don’t mind the new incarnation of McPhisto (because that’s what it is). Of course it’s not half as pertinent and efficient as it was in 1993 but I get it.
Now, I imagine the casual listener tuning in to see U2 and being turned off by this introduction. I think it’s very risky.
I did a fast forward through the entire thing, except Acrobat. I also watched a take of Dirty Day and it’s really a shame Bono is focusing on a speech that has no interest, musically speaking. And where did Edge’d solo go ? I missed opportunity.

I was really disappointed with E+I.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

Band sounds really tight, but as much as I’m rooting for him, I’m sad to say that our front man has lost the plot. If this was a football team, we would be looking for a new striker. Bono’s stories are boring, and he slows things down. I liked the show live. The band sounded heavy. But now that I hear Bono’s boring mumbling clearer, I lose interest. I actually feel genuinely sad after watching that Berlin clip.
