Leonard Cohen Appreciation Thread
« on: November 07, 2017, 03:15:22 PM »
Today marks the one year anniversary of the great poet's death. Last night in my hometown Montreal, many great artists (Sting, KD Lang, Elvis Costello, Lana Del Ray and others) gathered at the Bell Center for a tribute concert called "Tower of Song".

I could not attend being away, but the concert will be broadcast tonight on CBC Radio. If interested you can catch it here:

Also today, the City inaugurated a massive mural painting on Crescent Street. It will be a Montreal landmark for years. Simply beautiful.
Here's a picture of it: https://twitter.com/WomanFromAway/status/926489645516500992

For the next week, I'll share some of my favourite Cohen songs with you. If you don't know the man's work, it should give you a good introduction.

I'll start with "A Thousand Kisses Deep". It's a song that came later in his career, and it gives the listener a good sample of his work from the past 15 years. I find it gorgeous.

Today, another one of my favourites, "Who by Fire".

This is a live performance in London in 2013. Amazing guitar intro by Javier Mas. And Leonard was in great form at 80.

This is Leonard at his peak. I'm Your Man.

(do yourself a favor and download the album by the same name. An absolute classic.)

Cohen has become one of my favorite musicians in the last 5 years.  Can't believe i didn't get into him until my 30's.  I've been saying to people that i started listening to Bob Dylan when i was 14, but that's only because it started listening to Cohen when i was 30.
Love his last two albums.  His death really bummed me.
Been reading his poetry the last few years.  Some is very deep.

Did you know that Dylan was the first to cover Hallelujah back in 1988? That was before John Cale reworked the original Cohen version. Jeff Buckley then covered Cale's version, and the rest is history. Even in his later tours, Cohen would perform the Cale version.

Here's the Dylan cover

A posthumous album is coming soon.  :)

Wow.  I was shocked when i saw the headline because i didn't think there was any other new material out there, but unreleased tracks and collaborations make sense.  I read The Flame when it was released earlier in the year and it was meant to be all of his poetry up to his death including lyrics from the last few albums and i didn't see any songs that i didn't recognize.

His son Adam, I have to say, is very dedicated to the legacy of his father's music. I'm very confident this album will be excellent, as was You Want It Darker, which Adam produced.

First song/poem is out. Chills.
