Blatant self-sampling ...is it wrong?
« on: November 02, 2017, 09:47:01 PM »
You are rock n roll. You and I are rock n roll.

They don't even try to hide that this is Glastonbury - Volcano - American Soul.

But is it wrong? I remember thinking that it was ridiculous to leave the magnificent "lady with the spinning head" off of Zooropa just because it shared parts with UTEOTW and the fly.

But this time they basically took an entire song and replicated it. I prefer this incarnation to volcano - RefuJesus apart - but I can't help thinking that it's an odd decision....

Is it wrong?

Well there is no "wrong" in rock and roll. It is lazy though, and regardless of whatever sophisticated explanation the band offers, the critics will rip them apart.

But for me it comes down to whether I like the song. While I don't think the Spinning Head / Fly / UV parallel works since LWTSH was not released on an album, it doesn't bother me at all.

And neither would this, if I liked the song. #JustBeingHonest

I wouldn't even call it self sampling. They blatantly took a piece from a prior song and made it the chorus to a new song.

What's next, a new song with Bono screaming "I'm Wide Awake"?

I find it a little odd as used to hearing the crossover parts in a particular way. It doesn't particularly both me though or make me feel worse about the song (Soul the more superior to me). It will be interesting to hear what the band have to say about it. They may well claim that it is a means of connection between SOI and SOE in some way.

I've missed hearing American Soul as its been taken down.

But I loved Glastonbury and was upset they had dropped it For SOi.

I was happy Volcano came from Glastonbury as its one of my favourites.

If american soul is anything like Glastonbury I'm all for it.

Having a song about Glastonbury must have been too cheesy for them in Hindsight.

There's nothing inherently wrong with self-sampling. I believe that, so long as the sampling is done transformatively, you can get away with it.

This just feels like a lazy way to draw SOI & SOE together.

i havent heard it but eh, it wouldn't be the first time modern U2 repeated themselves. I mean Vertigo is an improved Elevation, Volcano is an improved Glastonbury, etc.

Yeah and this is taking it a step further. It's basically more akin to Vertigo / Native son

U2 fans were having a similar discussion in 2004.

No, not in my eyes. Rappers sample OTHER artists music etc and never get called out, which is more shameful than using your own material. Nothing wrong with sampling your own stuff, as long as it's not simply repeating yourself WHOLESALE.

American soul has used the melody of Glastonbury, which was obviously an unfinished song and played only twice live (if I remember correctly). It has a SNIPPET of volcano in it. It's basically like when u2 released 'mercy' on the wide awake in Europe EP. It was their finished version of the bootleg of mercy version knocking around on youtube.

To me, American soul is the finished version of Glastonbury. Glastonbury was never released and only played live twice.
It sounds nothing like volcano except for a 15 second snippet taken from that song.

It's weird.

I had the same thought when they sampled "let me in the sound" from Boots for the intro to Fez.

This is weirder.

That would have seemed less weird if Fez had been the opening track on the album and Boots came later.

This suggests the U2 'vault' is almost as empty as Everton's trophy cabinet.

actually, I'm wrong. The song sounds nothing like volcano and Glastonbury except for the 'you are rock and roll' part. the verses and the music are very different in comparison to Glastonbury/volcano.

anyway, I for one don't have a problem with it. If it took Glastonbury and volcano to arrive at this point, I'm happy they arrived here. It's probably going to be one of my favourite tracks on the album.
