Last two albums, how many songs get a pass for you?
« on: February 20, 2019, 04:06:46 AM »
All songs get a pass mark for me on Songs Of Innocence except for Volcano,

With Songs Of Experience 8 songs get a pass mark, the one's that don't are,

The Blackout, Best Thing, American Soul, GOOYOW and Love Is Bigger,

So overall I think the band are still producing good music, and there are some real flashes of brilliance among the last two albums (notably - SLABT, Reach Me Now, The Troubles, The Crystal Ballroom, Little Things, 13)

I very rarely skip songs, but if I do...

SOI: This is where you can reach me now.

SOE: Originally it was Summer of Love...it has become Get out of your own way.

I don't think i skip any of the tracks from SOE other than 13 but that;s just because i associate it as a re-tooling on SFS which is one of the tracks from SOI that i skip along with The Miracle and California.

My SOI&E playlist omits California, The Miracle, GOOYOW, YTBTAM, American Soul, SFS, and The Showman. And EBW is replaced by a live version I like better than the poppy studio version.

It also includes The Crystal Ballroom and Book of Your Heart, because duh.

Simililar for me, but I also omit Volcano on SOI and Love is Bigger on SOE.

And I'm with you with CB and BOYH. Duh indeed.

Volcano always seemed perfectly benign to me, I never understood the antipathy towards it.

I like the studio version...but it sounded a bit fried live.

Maybe some people felt like the suckiness of AS seeped into Volcano? I think it's an alright song.

I liked it when it came out. Now maybe it has been contaminated by AS for my part...

Pretty similar take here.

Miracle - was an early favorite but burned out. I think it's just a very "easy" song, so it doesn't take getting used to. I never say, hey, I wanna listen to The Miracle. But if it's on, I'm perfectly happy. Usually start album play with EBW.

California - unlike most of you, it's not a skip for me. It was, however, the very LAST song on the album that I adopted. I love it. Loathed it at first.

SFS - same as Miracle, liked it early but moved on. It's a skip, but if I do play it, I'm perfectly happy.

Volcano - not usually a skip but not a top fave. Like AS way more. Like Volcano just fine.

Everything else on SOI is a gem to me.

Best Thing - skip. I will not die if forced to listen, but I have no idea why they made this a single. Jaysus.

GOOYOW/AS - screw all of you; I love em, I don't skip.

Showman - usually but not always a skip, do like it fine though.

13 - love the verses, loathe the chorus. I can't rectify this song. I want a do-over. It's different from Miracle of Showman, it's not a "pleasantly like but don't love." It's a love and a hate.

I will say that SOI and SOE don't have any songs that I loathe. This is different from NLOTH (loathe Boots, didn't get into SUC enough to even know it), HTDAAB (loathe most of the album), or ATYCLB (loathe the last third). IE's weakest songs for me, I'd still get at least some enjoyment out of. Grace, for example, I'D RATHER HAVE SILENCE THAN LISTEN TO IT.

i guess SFS, Volcano are the only ones i don't care much for on SOI and AS is the weakest on SOE obviously. Followed by GOYOW and SOL.

Love is Bigger is great and 13 is one of the best they've done in years.

On SoI, i enjoy ALL the songs, with the exception of The Miracle.

On SoE, Im not keen on TBTAYIM, GOOYOW, American Soul and The Blackout is borderline song, which sometimes i like, sometimes it grates on me.
All the other songs on the album are of an acceptable standard. BUT, SoE remains my least fave u2 album...and my least listened to album, by a country mile.
I have said before, NORMALLY, a new u2 album would be on heavy roatation for the year to 18 months following its release. In all honesty, i reckon i have only listened to SoE about 6 times in total, since release

@Exile. If I remember correctly you were pretty hyped when SOE leaked out and you've listened to it the first time. I remember you saying something like: they still fucking got it  ;).

How do you look at SOE now?
